India has added 11 wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites
  • To celebrate India's 75th Independence Day, 11 more wetlands have been added to the list of Ramsar sites to make 75 Ramsar sites covering an area of 13,26,677 hectares.
  • These 11 new sites include 4 sites in Tamil Nadu, 3 in Odisha, 2 in Jammu & Kashmir and one (1) each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. This has increased the number of Ramsar sites in the country to 75.
Ratan Tata awarded 'Order of Australia'
  • Ratan Tata was appointed an Honorary Officer of the General Division of the Order of Australia for his significant contribution to the relations between India and Australia, mainly in the areas of trade.
  • The Australian government has given this award in recognition of Ratan Tata's contribution to strengthening the relationship between India and Australia in the fields of trade and industry. Tata Sons Chairman N.Chandrasekaran was present during the award presentation.
  • Ratan Tata is a recipient of one of India's highest awards, the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
Voice of Mind @100 National Conference was inaugurated by the Vice President of the Republic, Mr. Jekdeep Dhankar
  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's monthly radio program Manat Voice will mark the 100th episode. The National Conference was inaugurated at Scientist Bhawan, New Delhi under the leadership of the Vice President Mr. Jekdeep Dhankar and the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Mr. Anurag Thakur. 
  • The conference was organized following the success of the Prime Minister's monthly program on radio which reached over 100 crore people across India.
The Union Cabinet has approved the policy for the Medical Devices Sector
  • The medical devices sector in India is an essential integrator of the healthcare sector. It is to be noted that the sector has contributed immensely to the production of respirators, PPE suits, N-95 masks etc. during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • In this case, the Union Cabinet has approved the policy for the medical equipment sector. This will address the public health objectives of accessibility, low cost quality, and innovation. 
  • It is also expected to help in balanced growth. Encouraging domestic investment and manufacturing of medical devices will give impetus to Central Government's self-reliant India and manufacturing in India.
  • Accelerate the patient-centric approach and increase India's share of medical device manufacturing and innovation in the global market by 10 to 12 percent over the next 25 years. The policy is expected to help grow the medical devices industry from the current $11 billion to $50 billion over the next 5 years.
Union Cabinet approves setting up of 157 new Nursing Colleges
  • In order to strengthen the nursing profession in the country, the Union Cabinet for Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of 157 new nursing colleges at a cost of Rs.1570 crore near the medical colleges established since 2014. 
  • Through this, an additional 15,700 nursing graduates have been created every year. New Nursing Colleges will be established in 11 places in Tamil Nadu namely Tirupur, Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Krishnagiri, Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi.
  • Cabinet approval will ensure quality and reasonable tuition fees in nursing education in India. This step has been taken to increase the number of nursing staff.
  • The government plans to implement this project within the next two years. Under the leadership of Union Health Secretary, Principal Health Secretary of States and Union Territories, Medical Education Secretary will supervise the work for this.
Third Education Working Group meeting under G20 begins in Bhubaneswar
  • The Third Education Working Group meeting under G20 began today in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar with a seminar on 'Building skills for lifelong learning in the future environment of work'. It discusses innovative ideas and policies to transform the education sector globally. 
  • This task force meeting is being held in continuation of two task force meetings held earlier in Chennai and Amritsar. More than 60 representatives from G20 member countries, guest countries and international organization countries have participated in this 3-day meeting.
  • State Education Minister Dr Subhash Sarkar was the Chief Guest on the first day of the meeting.
  • 3 panel discussions are held in this task force meeting. Representatives from Brazil, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Russia, South Africa, Mauritius, Australia, England and representatives of UNICEF are participating.
Madhavaram - Chozinganallur Metro Work - contract worth Rs.299 crore
  • The second phase of the metro rail project is underway. Larsen and Toubro Company has contracted this work for Rs 299.46 crore to carry out all related works including construction, installation and testing of tunnels, tracks in the elevated area on the third route from Madhavaram Dairy to Chozinganallur. 
  • The signing of the agreement was held on Wednesday. The agreement was signed by Project Director T. Archunan on behalf of Chennai Metro Rail Company and Sunil Khattar, Vice President of Metro Business Division on behalf of Larsen & Toubro. The Japan International Cooperation Agency has provided funding for the project, which is the final track contract for the second phase of work. 
  • Chennai Metro Rail Chief General Manager S. Ashok Kumar (Tracks and Elevation Construction), Additional General Manager D. Gurunath Reddy, (Contract Procurement), General Counsels and senior officials of Larsen and Toubro were present on the occasion.
