Four floating shipyards in Tamil Nadu: Union Govt
  • The government is undertaking a number of reform initiatives to improve the maritime industry under the Sagarmala scheme. The ministry is taking steps to build floating landing sites instead of the old-fashioned way of constructing permanent ship landing sites. These floating landing platforms are eco-friendly, modern and long-lasting.
  • In this context, Ministry of Port Unions, Shipping and Waterways has given in-principle approval for four additional floating landing sites in Tamil Nadu.
  • These are set up at Agni Theertha and Villundi Theertha in Rameswaram, a spiritual place in India. Also, these landing sites are located at tourist attractions such as Cuddalore and Kanyakumari. Apart from this, the Union Ministry has given approval to set up a total of 11 floating landing sites in the state of Karnataka.
Indian Navy completes Joint Combat Exercise
  • The 2023 Tropex Joint Combat Exercise has commenced in the Indian Ocean region in November 2022, while the Arabian Sea region has been completed. In this exercise, the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Coast Guard, etc. jointly conduct coastal defense training. Training conducted on shore and on land was also included. 
  • About 21 million square nautical miles were covered in the Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. 70 warships, 6 submarines and more than 75 aircraft participated in this exercise. As part of this joint combat exercise, a Naval Commanders' Conference was held on the 6th of India's first aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
Online Gambling Prohibition Act Again - Decided in Cabinet Meeting Chaired by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin

In the cabinet meeting, in the budget to be presented by the Tamil Nadu government on March 20, the new projects and announcements to be announced department wise were discussed and approved. 
  • Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is planning to announce some announcements in the budget to be presented on March 20, including giving Rs. 1000 per month to eligible women as a women's rights allowance announced in DMK's election manifesto. A cabinet meeting was held regarding this and a final decision was taken.
  • Furthermore, on October 19 last year, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a bill banning online gambling in Tamil Nadu and sent it to Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi. The Governor asked the Tamil Nadu government for some clarifications regarding this bill. 
  • That too was immediately explained. In this situation, Governor RN Ravi yesterday returned the Online Gambling Prohibition Bill without approving it for more than 4 months. In the explanation given by the Governor, he has mentioned that 'the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has no authority to enact a law prohibiting online gambling'. 
  • In this situation, in the Tamil Nadu cabinet meeting held yesterday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, it has been decided to re-pass the online ban bill in the upcoming assembly meeting.
