- மகர சங்கராந்தி என்பது சூரியன் தனது வான பாதையில் பயணிக்கும்போது மகர (மகரம்) ராசிக்குள் நுழைவதைக் குறிக்கிறது.
- இந்த நாள் கோடைகாலத்தின் தொடக்கத்தையும், சூரியனின் வடக்கு நோக்கிய இயக்கமான உத்தராயண் எனப்படும் இந்துக்களுக்கு ஆறு மாத மங்களகரமான காலத்தையும் குறிக்கிறது.
- 'உத்தரயன்' அதிகாரப்பூர்வ கொண்டாட்டத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியாக, குஜராத் அரசு 1989 முதல் சர்வதேச காத்தாடி திருவிழாவை நடத்துகிறது.
- இந்த நாளுடன் தொடர்புடைய பண்டிகைகள் நாட்டின் பல்வேறு பகுதிகளில் வெவ்வேறு பெயர்களால் அறியப்படுகின்றன:
- வட இந்திய இந்துக்கள் மற்றும் சீக்கியர்களால் லோஹ்ரி,
- மத்திய இந்தியாவில் சுகரத்,
- அசாமிய இந்துக்களால் போகாலி பிஹு, மற்றும்
- தமிழர் மற்றும் பிற தென்னிந்திய இந்துக்களின் பொங்கல்.
- Makar Sankranti denotes the entry of the sun into the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn) as it travels on its celestial path.
- The day marks the onset of summer and the six months auspicious period for Hindus known as Uttarayan – the northward movement of the sun.
- As a part of the official celebration of 'Uttarayan', the Gujarat government has been hosting the International Kite Festival since 1989.
- The festivities associated with the day is known by different names in different parts of the country:
- Lohri by north Indian Hindus and Sikhs,
- Sukarat in central India,
- Bhogali Bihu by Assamese Hindus, and
- Pongal by Tamil and other South Indian Hindus.
