Court orders abolition of two-finger test course in private and government medical colleges across the country

  • When a woman is sexually assaulted, the two-finger test is used to determine if the woman has been assaulted using the hymen. After the rape victim files a complaint and registers an FIR, they conduct this two-finger test for a medical report. In 2018, the UN Council announced a ban on this method of testing.
  • Earlier, in 2014, the Union Ministry of Health laid down some criteria for investigating victims of sexual assault. It stated that 'two-finger test is illegal and the truth cannot be ascertained through this test'.
  • It is in this context that the Supreme Court has ordered the removal of the subject related to the two-finger test method from the medical college course. In this regard, two finger test notes should be removed from medical college textbooks and course notes.
  • It is regrettable that the two-finger test system is still practiced today. The procedure of female genital examination is against the dignity of women. "Any person who conducts the two-finger test will be held guilty," they said.
