President inaugurated express train service between Kolkata - Agartala

  • President Murmu flagged off the express train service between Kolkata-Agartala along with Chief Minister Manik Saha at a function held in Tripura state. Supreme Court dissents in appeal against hijab ban
  • Last Feb. On 5th Karnataka government banned Muslim girls from wearing hijab in educational institutions. Protests broke out against this. Meanwhile, a case was filed in Karnataka High Court by the Muslim students against this ban. 
  • The Karnataka High Court bench, which heard it, ordered, "Wearing hijab is not an essential custom in Islamic law. Therefore, the ban imposed on wearing hijab in educational institutions will go."
  • Against this, 24 people, including Muslim students, filed appeals in the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudanshu Dhulia delivered their judgment in the case. Justice Hemant Gupta said, "In this matter, I dismiss the appeals filed by the students.
  • Another judge, Sudhanshu Dhulia, said, "I quash the Karnataka High Court's order banning the wearing of hijab. The ban on wearing hijab is invalid. It is one's choice to wear hijab. Therefore, I quash the ordinance issued by the Government of Karnataka banning hijab. 
  • As there is no need for the court to interfere in an essential religious practice like hijab, that "I set aside the judgement. I consider the education of girl child as important. Realizing that girls in villages face many difficulties in getting education, I give this judgement," he ruled.
  • The two judges then said, "As the judgment of both of us has come out differently, we recommend to the Chief Justice that a session of additional judges of the Supreme Court should be set up to investigate this case."

India boycotts UN resolution against Russia

  • It proposed a resolution 'Ukraine's Territorial Integrity: Safeguarding the Principles of the United Nations Charter' condemning Russia's illegal annexation of parts of Ukraine. 
  • In support of this resolution, the UN 143 countries voted in the council. However, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Nicaragua voted against. 35 countries including India, China, Cuba, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam abstained from participating in the referendum.
Retail inflation in India rises to 7.41% - Central Govt
  • Retail inflation rose to 7 percent this month from 6.71 percent last July. The central government has said that retail inflation has risen due to the rise in food prices. India's retail inflation rose to 7.41 percent in September.
  • Prices of vegetables, spices, shoes and fuel and lighting have gone up by more than 10 percent. Egg prices are slightly lower. The Consumer Price Index is higher than the RBI target of 6 percent. However, retail inflation has been consistently above 6 percent for the past 8 months.
