- செப்டம்பர் 11 தேசிய வன தியாகிகள் தினமாக குறிக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்தியா முழுவதும் உள்ள காடுகள் மற்றும் வனவிலங்குகளைப் பாதுகாப்பதற்காக தங்கள் இன்னுயிர்களை தியாகம் செய்தவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்தும் வகையில் இந்த நாள் அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது.
- 2013 இல் சுற்றுச்சூழல் மற்றும் வன அமைச்சகம் அறிவித்ததைத் தொடர்ந்து இந்த நாள் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக நடைமுறைக்கு வந்தது.
- 1730 ஆம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 11 ஆம் தேதி ராஜஸ்தானில் பிரபலமற்ற கெஜர்லி படுகொலை நடந்தது. இந்த சோகமான சம்பவத்தின் போது, ராஜஸ்தானின் அப்போதைய மன்னர் மகாராஜா அபய் சிங்கின் உத்தரவின் பேரில் மக்கள் கெஜர்லி மரங்களை வெட்டத் தொடங்கினர்.
- ராஜஸ்தானின் கெஜர்லி கிராமத்தில் உள்ள பிஷ்னோய் சமூகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மக்களால் இந்த மரங்கள் புனிதமாக கருதப்பட்டன.
- நாட்டுப்புறக் கதைகளின் படி , இரக்கமின்றி மரங்களை வெட்டுவதற்கு எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவிக்கும் வகையில், அமிர்தா தேவி என்ற பெண் புனிதமான கெஜர்லி மரத்திற்குப் பதிலாக தனது தலையை வெட்டிக்கொண்டார்.
- அதன் பின்னர் எதிர்த்து போராடிய அமிர்தாவின் குழந்தைகள் உட்பட 350க்கும் மேற்பட்டவர்களை மரம் வெட்ட வந்த தொழிலாளர்கள் தலையை துண்டித்துக் கொன்றனர்.
- சம்பவம் குறித்த செய்தி மன்னருக்கு எட்டிய பிறகு, அவர் உடனடியாக தனது ஆட்களை பின்வாங்கச் சொன்னார் மற்றும் பிஷ்னோய் சமூகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மக்களிடம் மன்னிப்பு கேட்டார்.
- மன்னிப்பின் ஒரு பகுதியாக, பிஷ்னோய் கிராமங்களைச் சுற்றியுள்ள பகுதிகளில் மரங்களை வெட்டுவதையும் விலங்குகளைக் கொல்வதையும் தடைசெய்யும் ஒரு செப்புத் தகட்டில் பொறிக்கப்பட்ட ஆணையையும் அவர் வெளியிட்டார்.

- September 11 is observed as National Forest Martyrs Day. The day is observed to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for the protection of forests and wildlife across India. The day officially came into effect in 2013 following a declaration by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
- On 11 September 1730, the infamous Kejarli Massacre took place in Rajasthan. During this tragic incident, people started cutting Kejarli trees on the orders of the then King of Rajasthan, Maharaja Abhai Singh.
- These trees are considered sacred by the Bishnoi community of Kejarli village in Rajasthan.
- According to folklore, in protest against the merciless felling of trees, a woman named Amrita Devi cut off her head instead of the sacred Kejarli tree.
- After that, more than 350 people, including Amrita's children, who fought back, were beheaded by the woodcutters.
- After news of the incident reached the king, he immediately asked his men to retreat and apologized to the people belonging to the Bishnoi community.
- As part of the pardon, he also issued an edict engraved on a copper plate prohibiting the cutting of trees and the killing of animals in the areas around Bishnoi villages.
- To mark this day, many educational institutes across India organize events on this day to raise awareness and create awareness about conservation of trees, forests and environment.
- Various competitions are also conducted to engage and create awareness among children about the importance of forest conservation.
