Ranil Wickramasinghe, who was the interim president of Sri Lanka, was duly elected as the president

  • An election was held to elect a new president. In this election, the incumbent Interim President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Marxist Janata Vimukti Peramuna Party leader Anurakumar Dissanayake and Dalus Alagaperumal, who broke away from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Party, were contesting a three-way contest.
  • In this case, the speaker of the country also voted for the first time in the presidential election held today. After this, the votes were counted and the results announced. It has been officially announced that Ranil Wickramasinghe has won the presidency with the support of the majority of MPs.
  • Ranil Wickramasinghe became the President by getting 134 votes in the presidential election held in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. He will hold the post of President till November 2024. The Dallas beauty got only 82 votes. Anura Dissanayake got only 3 votes. Out of 223 votes cast by MPs, 4 votes were rejected.

Agreement with CMDA, American University
  • CMDA has entered into an agreement with Cornell University of America to improve urban planning in Chennai Metropolis. Similarly, the CMDA has decided to enter into an agreement with ITDP, a policy making agency for transport development. These decisions have been approved in a recent group meeting.

  • Minister Thamo Anparasan has launched a new app for Naam Kudiruppu Nam Poruppu program in Chennai.
  • Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board has launched a new application called Namma Nazret today for residents to pay their installments due to the board in a simple way.
  • Residents can download this application on their mobile phones and pay the monthly installment amount due to the Board, maintenance amount for Naam Kudiruppu Nam Poruppu, arrears, etc.
  • The amount due to the Board can also be paid through QR code at the website address www.tnuhdb.tn.gov.in. So far, 417 Resident Welfare Associations have been formed and 206 Resident Welfare Associations have been registered under the Naam Kudiruppu Nam Poruppuscheme.
  • Residents Welfare Association Registration fee in Deed Registration Department is reimbursed by the Government to the Residents Welfare Association.
India-Namibia Sign MoU on Wildlife Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity
  • The Government of India and the Government of the Republic of Namibia today signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wildlife Conservation and Sustainable Biodiversity for the historic establishment of the leopard in India.
  • Considering the interest of India and Namibia and promoting wildlife conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity based on the principles of mutual respect, sovereignty and equality, this MoU will lead to mutually beneficial development.
  • The salient features of the MoU are as follows:
  • Reintroduction of leopards to areas where they were previously extinct and conservation of biodiversity.
  • Sharing and exchange of expertise to promote leopard conservation in both countries.
  • Conservation of wildlife and sustainable use of biodiversity by following best practices in technical activities, means of livelihood of local people living in wildlife habitats and sustainable management of biodiversity.
  • Coordination in climate change, environmental governance, environmental impact assessments, pollution and waste management and other areas of mutual interest.
  • Exchange of experts for training and education in wildlife management including sharing of expertise on areas of need.
Digitization of family cards has been completed in all states and union territories
  • Digitization of family cards has been completed in all states and union territories. About 19.5 crore family cards have been digitized, Union Minister of State for Consumer Welfare, Food and Public Distribution Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
  • Aadhaar number enrollment with family card is 100% complete in 25 states and union territories including Tamil Nadu. The Minister said that states and Union Territories have been given time to complete Aadhaar enrollment in remaining family cards by September 30, 2022.
Cabinet approves Memorandum of Understanding signed between Judicial Service Commission of Maldives and India in the field of judicial cooperation
  • The MoU signed between the Judicial Service Commission of the Republic of Maldives and India in the field of judicial cooperation was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.
  • This is the eighth MoU signed between India and other countries in the field of judicial cooperation. The MoU will provide a platform to explore the use of IT for court digitization. It will also create potential for the growth of IT companies and new industries in both countries.
  • India-Maldives close ties have deepened on many levels in recent years. With the signing of this MoU, the good relations between the two countries will further strengthen.
  • This will not only facilitate the exchange of judicial wisdom and technology between the two countries in other fields of law but also enhance the objectives of the “Neighbourhood First” principle.
