Government of Tamil Nadu selected for 3 awards of the World Heritage Irrigation Framework

  • The International Irrigation and Drainage Authority (ICIT) announces the World Heritage Irrigation Structures and Water Conservation Awards each year. The National Irrigation and Drainage Board of India annually submits suitable proposals to the ICIT from the States of India.
  • Accordingly, in July last year, the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department applied for the declaration of 6 reservoir structures as World Heritage Sites, namely Kallanai, Kalingarayan Dam, Veeranam Reservoir, Pechipparai Dam, Madurantakam Lake and Sembarambakkam Lake.
  • Following this, 3 structures namely Kallanai, Veeranam Lake and Kalingarayan Dam have been selected for the World Heritage Irrigation Structures Awards.
  • Each country receives 4 awards annually by the International Organization. 4 awards have been selected for India last year. Of these, Tamil Nadu received 3 awards.
  • Kallanai: The historic kallanai dates back to AD. It is an ancient dam built by the Chola king Charikalan across the river Cauvery in the 2nd century. It is the 4th oldest water exchange system or water regulation structure in the world. Is the oldest structure still in use.
  • Veeranam Reservoir: The Veeranam Reservoir in Cuddalore district was established in the 9th century during the first Paranthaka Chola period.
  • Kalingarayan Dam: The Kalingarayan Dam across the Bhavani River in Erode District is an ancient dam built over 740 years ago by the Kongu King Kalingarayan Counter. It is the oldest structure still in use in India. The 3 awards for Tamil Nadu will be presented on November 7.
  • The award is given by the International Organization for the Promotion of Maintenance of Irrigation Structures and Water Conservation.
  • Similarly, nominations for more than 10 traditional irrigation structures are to be submitted on behalf of Tamil Nadu for the 2022 Award.
National Comm., Elected by Chinese President Xi Jinping as representative
  • Jinping, who last served as Chinese president in 2012, was re-elected in 2017 for a second term. In this context, the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China is scheduled to take place later this year.
  • Jinping has been selected by the Chinese Communist Central Committee to represent the country at the convention. Following this, provincial wise elections are held and those who get the majority support become the party leader and then the president.
  • Xi Jinping has been elected unopposed as the delegate to the 20th National Congress, the convention of the Regional Comm.
Asian Wrestling Championship 2022
  • Indian wrestlers have won medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Mongolia. The Asian Wrestling Championship has been held since 1979. The current year's competitions are being held in three categories as men and women. The Indian athletes have won medals in various weight categories.
  • Ravi Tahiya, who won silver in wrestling at the main Tokyo Olympics, and Bajrang Punia, who won bronze, also won medals. About 250 athletes from 19 countries took part in the event. Ravi Tahiya from Haryana won the gold medal in the 57 kg freestyle weight category by beating Kazakhstan.
  • Bajrang Punia won silver in the 65 kg freestyle weight category. Naveen won bronze in the 70kg freestyle weight category. Arjun, Sachin, Harpreet and Sunil Kumar won bronze in the Greco-Roman category. In the women's category, Anshu Malik and Radhika won silver. Sushma, Sarita and Manisha won bronze.

  • Speaking on the occasion, the Union Finance Minister said that India's economic growth is currently accelerating and faster than that of other major economies. He said India was the best country to deal with the Kovit epidemic and so far 1.85 billion Kovid vaccines have been given.
Public Relations Award 2022 for NMTC
  • NMTC, the National Minerals Corporation, has bagged the Public Relations Award 2022 presented by the Public Relations Society of India. It ranks first in four categories. The National Minerals Corporation received the award for its corporate website, outstanding annual report, newsletter design, and CSR corporate video.
