Approved to continue Indian footwear and leather development project at a cost of Rs 1,700 crore

  • The Indian Footwear and Leather Development Program (IFLDP) has been approved to continue at a cost of Rs 1,700 crore from 2021-22. On January 19, the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of the Indian Footwear and Leather Development Program, until the previous IFLDP project was reviewed on or before March 31, 2026, whichever is earlier.
  • The Indian Footwear and Leather Development Program aims to improve the infrastructure in the leather sector, address environmental issues in the leather sector, pave the way for additional investments, create employment and increase productivity.
  • From 2017-18 to 2019-20, HRD sub-program and capacity building training was imparted to 3.24,722 persons. Of these, 2,60,880 trainees were given jobs in the leather and footwear industry.
  • During the last 2019-20, 12,947 workers were imparted skill development training. No training could be provided in 2020-21 due to Govt-19 infection.
