Implementation of watershed renewal scheme for agricultural development: Central Government, World Bank sign a Rs. 869 crore loan agreement

  • The Central Government, the Governments of Karnataka and the Government of Odisha have signed agreements with the World Bank to implement a watershed renewal program for agricultural development through innovative development.
  • This will enable organizations at the national and state levels to follow improved water management practices. This will enable farmers to increase their productivity and earn better returns by adopting climate change-friendly farming practices.
  • The federal government is committed to fertilizing 26 million hectares of barren land by 2030 and doubling farmers' incomes by 2023. Effective implementation of watershed management will help increase livelihoods in rainfed areas.
  • The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) will lend Rs 453.5 crore to Karnataka and Rs 370 crore to Odisha.
