- இந்திய சுதந்திரத்திற்கு முன்னர் இந்திய இராணுவ தளபதியாக ஆங்கில அதிகாரிகள் இருந்தனர். சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் இந்தியத் தரைப்படையின் முதல் படைத்தலைவராக (commander-in-chief) லெப்டினன்ட் ஜெனரல் கே எம் கரியப்பா 1949-ம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி 15 ம் தேதி பதவியேற்றார்.
- இதற்கு முன்பு ஆங்கில அதிகாரி ஜெனரல் சர் பிரான்சிஸ் புட்சர் இருந்தார். சர் பிரான்சிஸ் புட்சரிடமிருந்து ஜெனரல் கே எம் கரியப்பா இந்திய இராணுவ தளபதியாக பதவியை ஏற்றார்.
- இந்திய ராணுவத்துக்கு இந்தியரே முதல் இந்திய இராணுவ தளபதியாக லெப்டினன்ட் ஜெனரல் கே எம் கரியப்பா பதவியேற்ற ஜனவரி 15 ம் தேதி ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் இந்திய இராணுவ தினமாக கொண்டாடப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இந்த நாளில் ஆண்டுதோறும் இராணுவ வீரர்கள் மற்றும் போர் தியாகிகளுக்கு மரியாதை செய்யப்பட்டு வருகிறது.
- Prior to Indian independence, English officers were the commanders of the Indian Army. On January 15, 1949, Lieutenant General KM Kariyappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in independent India.
- Prior to this was the English officer General Sir Francis Butcher. Gen. K. M. Kariyappa, from Sir Francis Butcher, took over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.
- January 15 is celebrated every year as Indian Army Day, when Lieutenant General KM Kariyappa became the first Indian Army Commander to join the Indian Army. This day is honored annually by military veterans and martyrs of war.
