- முன்னாள் முதல்வர் கருணாநிதியின் பெரு முயற்சியால் இந்தியாவில் முதல் முறையாகத் தமிழ் மொழியானது 2004-ம் ஆண்டு செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.
- செம்மொழித் தமிழுக்கென தனித்தன்மையுடன் ஒரு நிறுவனத்தைத் தொடங்க வேண்டும் என்ற கருணாநிதியின் கனவினை நிறைவேற்ற, மத்திய அரசினைத் தொடர்ந்து வலியுறுத்தியதன் அடிப்படையில், 2006-ல் இந்திய மொழிகளுக்கான நடுவண் நிறுவனத்தின் ஒரு அங்கமாக இந்நிறுவனம் அமைக்கப்பட்டது.
- பின்னர் 2008-ம் ஆண்டில் செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனம் எனத் தன்னாட்சி பெற்ற நிறுவனமாக சென்னையில் அமைக்கப்பட்டது. செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனத்தின் தலைவர் முதல்வர் ஆவார்.
- செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனத்திற்கு தமிழ்நாடு அரசால் தோராயமாக 17 ஏக்கர் நிலம் ஒதுக்கீடு செய்யப்பட்டு, அந்நிலத்தினைச் சமன் செய்ய ரூ.1.45 கோடி நிதி வழங்கப்பட்டது.
- செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனத்தின் முக்கியத்துவம் கருதி கருணாநிதி, தமது சொந்த நிதியிலிருந்து ரூ.1 கோடி நிதியினை வழங்கி கலைஞர்.மு.கருணாநிதி செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு அறக்கட்டளையை அந்நிறுவனத்தில் நிறுவினார்.
- அவ்வறக்கட்டளையின் வாயிலாக செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வுக்குச் சிறந்த பங்களிப்பினை வழங்கிய அறிஞர் பெருமக்களுக்கு ஆண்டுதோறும் கலைஞர்.மு.கருணாநிதி செம்மொழித் தமிழ் விருது வழங்கப்படுகிறது.
- இவ்விருது இந்தியாவிலேயே உயரிய விருதாக ரூ.10 லட்சம் பரிசுத்தொகையுடன் பாராட்டுச் சான்றிதழும், கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதியின் உருவச்சிலையும் அடங்கியதாகும்.
- தொல்லியல், கல்வெட்டியல், நாணயவியல், இலக்கியம், மொழியியல், படைப்பிலக்கியம், இலக்கியத் திறனாய்வு, மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, நுண்கலைகள் ஆகிய துறைகளில் செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வுக்குச் சிறந்த பங்களிப்பை வழங்கியுள்ள அறிஞருக்கு இவ்விருது வழங்கப்படும்.
- அறக்கட்டளை தொடங்கப்பட்டபின் 2009ஆம் ஆண்டிற்கான முதல் விருது, பின்லாந்து நாட்டு அறிஞர் பேராசிரியர் அஸ்கோ பர்ப்போலாவுக்கு 2010, ஜூன் 23 அன்று கோவையில் நடைபெற்ற உலகத் தமிழ்ச் செம்மொழி மாநாட்டில் அன்றைய குடியரசுத் தலைவரால் வழங்கப்பட்டது.
- செம்மொழி தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனத்தால் வழங்கப்படும் கலைஞர். மு.கருணாநிதி செம்மொழித் தமிழ் விருது 2010 முதல் 2019 வரையிலான பத்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு வழங்கப்படாமல் இருந்தது.
- தற்போது முதல்வரின் தலைமையில் புதிய அரசு பொறுப்பேற்றவுடன் செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனத்தின் வளர்ச்சிக்கான முன்னெடுப்புகள் தொடங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அவ்வகையில் நிறுவனத்தின் 8வது ஆட்சிக்குழுக் கூட்டம் முதல்வரின் தலைமையில் 30.08.2021 அன்று நடைபெற்றது.
- தமிழக முதல்வரால் அமைக்கப் பெற்ற விருதுத் தேர்வுக் குழுவினரால் கீழ்க்காணும் பத்து விருதாளர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்:
- 2010 - முனைவர் வீ.எஸ். இராஜம், (Former Senior Lecturer, Department of South Asia Regional Studies, University of Pennsylvania) .
- 2011 - பேராசிரியர் பொன். கோதண்டராமன் (முன்னாள் துணைவேந்தர், சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம், சென்னை)
- 2012 - பேராசிரியர் இ. சுந்தரமூர்த்தி ( முன்னாள் துணைவேந்தர், தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக்கழகம்)
- 2013 - பேராசிரியர் ப. மருதநாயகம் (முன்னாள் இயக்குநர், புதுவை மொழியியல் பண்பாட்டு நிறுவனம், முன்னாள் பதிவாளர், புதுவைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம்)
- 2014 - பேராசிரியர் கு. மோகனராசு (முன்னாள் பேராசிரியர்& தலைவர், திருக்குறள் ஆய்வு மையம், சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம், சென்னை)
- 2015- பேராசிரியர். மறைமலை இலக்குவனார் ( முன்னாள் தமிழ்ப் பேராசிரியர், மாநிலக்கல்லூரி)
- 2016 - பேராசிரியர் கா. ராஜன் ( முன்னாள் பேராசிரியர், வரலாற்றுத் துறை, புதுவைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம்),
- 2017 - பேராசிரியர் உல்ரிக் நிக்லாஸ், (Professor and Head of the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies, Cologne University, Germany).
- 2018 - கவிஞர் ஈரோடு தமிழன்பன் ( முன்னாள் தமிழ்ப் பேராசிரியர், புதுக் கல்லூரி, சென்னை).
- 2019 - பேராசிரியர் கு.சிவமணி ( முன்னாள் முதல்வர், கரந்தைப் புலவர் கல்லூரி, தஞ்சாவூர் & திருவள்ளுவர் கல்லூரி, நெல்லை).
- Tamil was first declared a classical language in India in 2004 due to the great efforts of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
- The institute was set up in 2006 as part of the Central Institute for Indian Languages, following a persuasive urge from the Central Government to fulfill Karunanidhi's dream of starting a company exclusively for Classical Tamil.
- Later in 2008 it was established in Chennai as an autonomous institution called the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies. He is the Chief Minister of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies.
- The Government of Tamil Nadu has allotted approximately 17 acres of land to the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies and provided Rs. 1.45 crore to level the land.
- Considering the importance of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies, Karunanidhi established the Artist M. Karunanidhi Foundation for the Classical Tamil Studies Foundation with Rs. 1 crore from his own funds.
- The Artist M. Karunanidhi Classical Tamil Award is given annually to scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the study of Classical Tamil through their command.
- The award is the highest in India with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, a certificate of appreciation and a statue of artist M. Karunanidhi.
- The award is given to a scholar who has made outstanding contributions to the study of classical Tamil in the fields of archeology, sculpture, numismatics, literature, linguistics, creative writing, literary criticism, translation, and fine arts.
- The first award for the year 2009 after the inauguration of the Foundation was presented to the Finnish scholar Professor Asko Barbola by the then President of the World Tamil Classical Conference held on 23rd June 2010 in Coimbatore.
- Artist offered by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies. The M. Karunanidhi Classical Tamil Award was not given for ten years from 2010 to 2019.
- Preparations for the development of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies have begun with the inauguration of the new Government under the leadership of the Chief Minister. Accordingly, the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Company was held on 30.08.2021 under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister.
- The following ten awardees have been selected by an award selection committee set up by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu:

- 2011 - Prof. Pon. Gothandraman (Former Vice Chancellor, University of Chennai, Chennai)
- 2012 - Prof. E. Sundaramoorthy (Former Vice Chancellor, Tamil University)
- 2013 - Prof. p. Marudanayakam (Former Director, Puduvai Linguistic and Cultural Institute, Former Registrar, University of Puduvai)
- 2014 - Prof. Gu. Mohanarasu (Former Professor & Chairman, Thirukkural Research Center, University of Chennai, Chennai)
- 2015- Professor. Maraimalai Ilakkuaanaar (Former Tamil Professor, State College)
- 2016 - Prof. Ka. Rajan (Former Professor, Department of History, University of New Delhi),
- 2017 - Professor Ulrik Nicklas, (Professor and Head of the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies, Cologne University, Germany).
- 2018 - Poet Erode Tamilanpan (Former Professor of Tamil, New College, Chennai).
- 2019 - Prof. K. Sivamani (Former Chief Minister, Karanthai Puluvar College, Thanjavur & Thiruvalluvar College, Nellai).
