- Shocking reports have recently surfaced that cell phone conversations, pictures and videos of prominent people, politicians and journalists from various countries have been spied on through the PEGASUS software of the Israeli NSO.
- Pegasus is spyware developed by the NSO Group, an Israeli ciphers company, that can be installed indirectly on mobile phones (and other devices) running most versions of iOS and Android. 2021 Project Pegasus Revelations claim that the current Pegasus software can use all the latest iOS versions up to iOS 14.6.
- According to the Washington Post and other major media sources, Pegasus not only enables keystroke tracking of all communications from a phone (texts, emails, web searches), but also phone calls and location tracking.
- At the same time the NSO enables the hijacking of both the mobile phone's microphone and the camera, thus becoming a standard surveillance device. The company was previously owned by Francisco Partners, an American private equity firm. Then repurchased in 2019 by the founders.
- The NSO says it "provides governments with authorized technology to fight terrorism and crime." It has issued sections of the Convention stating that consumers should use its products only for criminal and national security investigations, and that this is a industry-leading approach to human rights.
- Spyware is named after the legendary winged horse Pegasus — a Trojan horse that can send "fly through the air" to infect phones.
