India supports the UN General Assembly resolution to create a new world map
- A vote on this resolution, proposed by Togo, was held last Friday in the 193-member UN General Assembly. A total of 164 countries, including India and Pakistan, voted in favor of the resolution. Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine did not participate in the vote.
- Meanwhile, it is reported that the United States was the only country to vote against the resolution. The Mercator map projection used in world maps for centuries lies at the heart of this debate.
- Created in the 16th century by geographer Gerardus Mercator to aid maritime navigation, this map remains widely used today in education, media, and various official contexts.
- Notably, regions near the equator appear relatively small, while areas towards the poles appear larger. Consequently, it is argued that regions such as Africa, Latin America, and South Asia appear smaller than their actual size.
