Madras High Court Orders Nameboards in Tamil in Tamil Nadu by November 1, 2026
  • The previous DMK government had issued an order in June 2025 requiring all shops in Tamil Nadu to display nameboards in Tamil. The order mandated the inclusion of the name in Tamil, while allowing the English version to be displayed beneath it if desired.
  • It also stipulated a fine of ₹2,000 for non-compliance. Challenging this order, the Retailers Association of India (based in Mumbai) filed a petition in the Madras High Court. The petition argued that nameboards should reflect globally recognized brand identities and that altering them would confuse customers.
  • Furthermore, it stated that while they were willing to implement the government's order, immediate compliance was not feasible due to financial and other constraints; thus, they requested additional time to make the changes.
  • A lawyer representing the association reiterated the request for a three-month extension to implement the order. The case came up for hearing at the Madras High Court on September 5, 2026.
  • Justice K. Surendar, presiding over the matter, ordered that shop nameboards be changed to Tamil by November 1 as a final opportunity, noting that failure to do so would authorize the concerned officials to take action, and subsequently closed the case.
