- The Central Government has insisted that the three-language policy be implemented in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy mandates that students be taught three languages: the relevant state language, English, and any one other Indian language.
- In line with this NEP directive, the CBSE announced that the three-language policy would be implemented starting from Class 6 in the current academic year. The board further announced a phased implementation, extending the policy to Class 7 in the following academic year and to Class 8 the year after that.
- Several petitions challenging the CBSE's three-language policy were filed in the Supreme Court. These matters came up for hearing today (Sept. 28) before a bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya and V. Mohana.
- Addressing the issue, the bench stated, "The same exemption granted to Class 7 students must also be extended to Class 6 students. We do not wish to cause hardship to the students; rather, we want to provide them with the necessary facilities."
- Currently, if students in classes 7, 8, and 9 study a third language, they are not required to take the CBSE board examination for that language upon reaching class 10; instead, assessment can be conducted at the school level. The Supreme Court has ordered that this concession be extended to class 6 students as well.
