Resolution Passed in Tamil Nadu Assembly Against FCRA Bill
- School Education Minister Rajmohan moved a special resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today, urging the Central Government to withdraw the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill.
- A BJP member staged a walkout in protest against the resolution. Subsequently, Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar announced that the resolution had been passed unanimously following a voice vote.
- The NEET examination runs counter to social justice, equality, and state rights; the NEET system must be abolished. The exam fosters the proliferation of high fee coaching centers and has lost the confidence of students across the country.
- Rural and underprivileged students are adversely affected by NEET. Medical admissions should be based on Class 12 marks. The Central Government must bring about a legislative amendment to scrap NEET.
- Respecting the rights of states is the essence of federalism; therefore, the Centre should cancel the NEET examination. Health Minister Arunraj moved the resolution against the NEET system in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today, and a debate on the matter ensued. While parties including the DMK, AIADMK, and PMK extended their support, a lone BJP MLA staged a walkout.
- Although the state is referred to as 'Keralam' in the Malayalam language, it is recorded as 'Kerala' in the First Schedule of the Constitution. Consequently, the Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on June 24, 2024, seeking to change the state's name to 'Keralam'.
- The Central Government initiated the process to rename Kerala under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution, which empowers Parliament to alter the boundaries and names of states.
- Amidst continuous uproar by the opposition, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced the 'Kerala (Name Change) Bill, 2026' in the Lok Sabha.
- The Bill was successfully passed in the Lok Sabha via a voice vote without any debate. Similarly, the 'National Cooperative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026' designed to expedite and simplify financial assistance for cooperative societies was introduced in the House by Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol and passed through a voice vote.
