Appointment of 5 New Judges to the Supreme Court
- To alleviate the existing case backlog and expedite the filling of vacancies within the Supreme Court of India, the Central Government today (Monday, June 1) issued a significant order appointing five new judges.
- The official notification regarding this development was formally released by Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, on his social media platform, 'X'.
- Accordingly, the details of the individuals set to assume office as new judges of the Supreme Court are as follows:
- Justice Sheel Nagu: Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
- Justice Sri Chandrashekhar: Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
- Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva: Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
- Justice Arun Palli: Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
- Senior Advocate V. Mohana: Venkata Subramani Mohana, a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court.
- Previously, while the Supreme Court was authorized to function with a total of only 34 judges (including the Chief Justice), the Union Cabinet convening on May 5 granted historic approval to increase the total sanctioned strength of the Court to 38.
- With the current addition of these five new judges, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court now rises to 37.
- Born into a humble background in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, V. Mohana has now made history by becoming the second woman to be appointed directly from the legal profession (the Bar) to the bench of the Supreme Court.
- A student of the first batch of the five-year law program introduced in 1983, she completed her legal studies at the Coimbatore Law College. Subsequently, in the late 1980s, she began her professional career at the Coimbatore District Courts.
- It was the arguments she presented while arguing the case regarding the grant of 'Permanent Commission' to female army officers that garnered significant attention. The verdict in this case is widely regarded as a pivotal step toward gender equality within the Indian Army.
- Recognizing her legal prowess, the Supreme Court designated her as a 'Senior Advocate' in 2015. Typically, it is High Court judges who are elevated to the Supreme Court; however, being appointed as a Supreme Court judge directly from the legal bar is an extremely rare occurrence.
- Following Justice Indu Malhotra, Mohana is the second woman to be appointed as a judge in this manner. Furthermore, she is also the second woman from Tamil Nadu to become a Supreme Court judge.
