Tamil Nadu Tops Southern States in Solar Power Generation
  • By harnessing naturally available sunlight rather than relying on natural resources like coal, India is garnering global attention for its electricity generation efforts. In particular, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a pioneering state in solar power generation within the southern region of India.
  • According to data recently released by the Central Electricity Authority, a total of 613 crore units of solar electricity were generated across the southern states last March. Notably, Tamil Nadu alone generated an impressive 218.60 crore units, securing the top spot on the list.
  • It is worth mentioning that in March 2025, Tamil Nadu's production stood at a mere 160 crore units. With an increase of approximately 58 crore units over the span of a year, Tamil Nadu is rapidly advancing toward self-sufficiency in power generation.
  • Following Tamil Nadu, Karnataka secured the second position with 181 crore units. Andhra Pradesh generated 113 crore units, while Telangana produced 71 crore units.
  • Kerala ranked next with 29 crore units, while the Union Territory of Puducherry recorded 10 lakh units. This comparative list clearly highlights the significant contribution made by Tamil Nadu.
  • The prevailing climatic conditions in Tamil Nadu are considered to be the primary factor behind this success. With uninterrupted sunlight available for over 300 days a year, Tamil Nadu has become an ideal destination a veritable paradise for solar power plants.
  • Consequently, various private companies are demonstrating keen interest in establishing high-capacity solar power stations across different regions of the state.
  • It is not just the government and private enterprises; the common people, too, have now begun to realize the importance of solar energy. With the aim of reducing electricity costs, the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of homes and office buildings can truly be described as evolving into a grassroots movement. As of last March, Tamil Nadu's total solar power generation capacity has reached an impressive 13,579 megawatts.
  • Compared to the previous financial year, Tamil Nadu's growth is truly remarkable. Solar power generation, which stood at 1,573 crore units in the 2024-25 fiscal year, rose to 1,969 crore units during the period spanning from April 2025 to March of this year.
Central Government Permits 100% Foreign Investment in the Insurance Sector
  • In a move poised to bring about a monumental transformation in India's insurance sector, the Central Government has authorized 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) within this domain.
  • Concurrently, it has been announced that the foreign investment limit for the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) will remain capped at 20 percent. Through this new reform, the path has been paved for foreign entities to make full-scale investments in Indian insurance companies.
