Supreme Court Upholds Validity of Online Gambling Ban Law Enacted by the DMK Government
- Immediately upon assuming power in 2021, the DMK government enacted a pivotal law imposing a ban on online gambling. The "Dravidian Model" government enacted this legislation in response to a spate of suicides linked to online gambling an activity that was causing severe distress to the general public.
- Subsequently, the High Courts of Chennai and Karnataka issued orders staying the implementation of this law. Challenging these stay orders, a case was filed in the Supreme Court.
- Delivering its verdict on the matter today, the Supreme Court declared that the law enacted by the Tamil Nadu government is indeed valid. The Court ruled that the stay orders issued by the Chennai and Karnataka High Courts were erroneous.
- The Supreme Court affirmed that the Tamil Nadu government was justified in enacting legislation to ban online gambling, given its detrimental impact on the public. Furthermore, the Court stated that State governments possess the authority to regulate online gambling games.
