Nizar Amidi Elected as President of Iraq
- Five months after parliamentary elections were held in Iraq, no single political party has secured a majority. According to the country's constitution, a President must be elected within 30 days of the newly elected parliament convening for its first session.
- Against this backdrop—and with the constitutional deadline for electing a President having already lapsed over the past two months—a vote was finally held on Saturday (April 11).
- In this election, no single candidate managed to secure the required two-thirds majority. Among the contenders, Amidi established a significant lead over the 15 candidates running against him. He maintained his lead by securing 208 votes in the first round and 227 votes in the second round.
- In accordance with Iraqi political tradition, the position of President is reserved for a Kurd; the powerful office of Prime Minister is held by a Shiite; and the Speaker of Parliament is a Sunni.
- In this context, Amidi—an engineer originally hailing from Iraq's Duhok province—is a member and prominent leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. Furthermore, he has historically maintained close ties with former Presidents Jalal Talabani and Fuad Masum.
