India's Milk Production Rises to 247 Million Tonnes
- The sector contributes 65 percent to total production and 16 percent to India's Gross Value Added (GVA).
- India's milk production has surged from 17 million tonnes in 1950 to 247 million tonnes in 2025. Punjab and Haryana hold the leading position in production, while it is projected that the demand for milk will range between 480 and 606 million tonnes by the year 2047.
- In terms of the country's total milk production, the contribution of indigenous buffaloes stands at 31.18 percent, followed by crossbred cattle at 30.80 percent, indigenous cattle at 11.20 percent, unclassified cattle at 9.64 percent, unclassified buffaloes at 11.97 percent, goats at 3.32 percent, and exotic cattle at 1.89 percent.
