Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated projects worth ₹1,594.90 crore in Dindigul
- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, today (7.1.2026), at a government function held at the Velunachiyar Complex in Dindigul district, inaugurated 111 completed projects worth ₹337.84 crore, laid the foundation stone for 212 new projects worth ₹174.20 crore, and distributed government welfare assistance worth ₹1082.86 crore to 2,62,864 beneficiaries from various departments.
- In a petition filed by Murugan from Avaniyapuram, Madurai district, it was stated that, "The Jallikattu festival held on the first day of the Tamil month of Thai (January 15) in Avaniyapuram village is a traditional event that has been conducted by the village public for over 100 years.
- After the Supreme Court's permission in 2017, a private association conducted the Jallikattu festival in 2018. A petition against this had already been filed in the High Court.
- Following this, the court ordered that the district administration should conduct the Jallikattu festival and that the competition should be held with a 16-member advisory committee," the petition stated.
- It further mentioned that despite submitting a petition to the district administration requesting permission for the village general committee, comprising representatives from all communities, to conduct the Jallikattu festival scheduled for the 15th of this month, no action has been taken.
- Meanwhile, the bench of Justices Jayachandran and Ramakrishnan, which heard the petition, observed, 'Jallikattu is not a sport like the IPL. Permission for it was granted only after various protests and problems.
- Several complications arose because some individuals conducted the Jallikattu. Therefore, it is appropriate that the government conducts the Jallikattu competitions.'
- Furthermore, the judges dismissed the petition seeking permission for the village committee to conduct the Jallikattu competition to be held in Avaniyapuram on January 15th.
- They clarified that since the Jallikattu festivals of Avaniyapuram, Palamedu, and Alanganallur are world-renowned, it is not appropriate for individuals to conduct these festivals, and that the government administration should continue to conduct these competitions, and issued an order to that effect.
- Through this verdict, it has been confirmed that the Jallikattu competitions will be held under the direct control and supervision of the government.
