A thousand-year-old clay goddess discovered in Pattinamarudur
- There is a 300-acre area in Pattinamarudur, Thoothukudi district, declared an archaeological site by the Tamil Nadu government. In this land, a small 5.4 cm tall clay goddess was discovered by the local people on Sunday.
- Only the upper part of the statue has been found. The statue does not have two arms. The statue, which is found in a state of disrepair, is seen with decorative carvings and a beautiful braid on its head.
- According to comparative studies, its full figure may be 17 to 18 cm. tall. Its shape looks like the square statue of our mother goddess Sambapathi Amman temple mentioned in the Aimperum Kapiyams.
- Accordingly, this statue is a thousand years old. Similarly, two different shaped clay sculptures of goddesses have also been found. Similarly, some terracotta idols have been found in Poompugar and Keezhadi.
- Along with this, a 3.2 cm wide stone weapon called a scythe, handed over by the public, has also been found. On its side, only the Pandyas’ symbol, the single fish, is engraved, and four letters are visible in the main part.
- Its final letter is like the early Tamil letter ‘Y’ of the Second Sangam period, and the other three letters are a mixture of Tamil (Brahmi) and cursive letters, and look like the letters used by trading groups. If these letters are read together, it can be interpreted as ‘Kula Puya’ (Kula Puyangam).
