Plan to set up 9 British university campuses in India - Indian Prime Minister Modi and British Prime Minister Kieran Starmer announced
- British Prime Minister Kieran Starmer has arrived in India on a two-day official visit (Oct. 8). Starmer, who arrived in Mumbai by plane from London along with more than 100 university vice-chancellors and industry figures, was welcomed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
- Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi today met British Prime Minister Kieran Starmer at the Governor's House in Mumbai. During the meeting, they discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations in various sectors including trade, investment and technology, as well as regional and international affairs.
- In a historic move to strengthen academic ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that nine leading British universities, including the University of Southampton, will set up campuses in India.
- The University of Southampton’s Gurugram campus has already opened and its first batch of students have been admitted. The initiative marks a significant step in India-UK education cooperation and aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020.
- It aims to provide Indian students with access to world-class education without having to leave the country, while promoting joint research and academia-industry partnerships to boost innovation and skill development.
- Five leading British universities have committed to setting up campuses in major Indian cities. In addition to Southampton, the University of Bristol has received approval from the University Grants Commission to open a corporate campus in Mumbai.
- It is planned to admit students in 2026. The visit of the British Prime Minister coincides with the largest ever UK business delegation, which has strengthened bilateral relations.
