Shankar Jiwal appointed as Fire Commissioner
  • Chief Minister Stalin has issued an order appointing former DGP Shankar Jiwal as the Fire Commissioner. The Director General of Tamil Nadu Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal is retiring today and has been given a new post.
  • Shankar Jiwal hails from Uttarakhand. An engineer, he qualified the IPS examination and joined the Tamil Nadu Police in 1990. Shankar Jiwal, who started his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Mannargudi, is retiring as DGP.
  • He has held various posts including Salem District Superintendent of Police, Madurai District Superintendent of Police, Trichy City Police Commissioner, Central Narcotics Control Unit Zonal Director, Intelligence Branch DIG, IG, Special Task Force ADGP, Armed Forces ADGP, Chennai Metropolitan Police Commissioner. He is a two-time recipient of the President's Medal.
PM attends India-Japan Economic Forum
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Shigeru Ishiba attended the India-Japan Economic Forum organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Keidenren [Japan Business Federation] in Tokyo on August 29, 2025.
  • Leading industry figures from India and Japan, including the CEOs of the India-Japan Business Leaders Forum, participated in the meeting. The report of the 12th India-Japan Business Leaders Forum was presented to the two leaders by its co-chairs.
  • Highlighting the growing partnerships between Indian and Japanese industry, Mr. Norihiko Ishiguro announced various B2B MoUs signed between Indian and Japanese companies in various sectors such as steel, artificial intelligence, space, education and skills, clean energy and human resource exchanges.
India's GDP growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal
  • Data showed that the GDP growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal was driven by the performance of the agriculture sector. At the same time, India was the fastest growing major economy as China's GDP growth was 5.2 percent in the April-June period.
  • In this context, the previous highest GDP growth was 8.4 percent in the January-March period of 2024. According to the National Statistics Office data released today, the agriculture sector registered a growth of 3.7 percent from 1.5 percent in the April-June period of 2024-25.
  • However, manufacturing growth accelerated to 7.7 percent in the first quarter of 2026, compared to 7.6 percent in the same period the previous year. Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of India had revised its GDP growth forecast for 2025-26 to 6.5 percent.
  • It had projected 6.5 percent in the first quarter, 6.7 percent in the second quarter, 6.6 percent in the third quarter and 6.3 percent in the fourth quarter.
Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel appointed as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund
  • The government has appointed Urjit Patel as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), nearly four months after Krishnamurthy Subramanian was removed six months before his term ended.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of economist and former Reserve Bank Governor Dr Urjit Patel as the Managing Director (ED) of the International Monetary Fund for a period of three years.
  • The appointment will be effective from the date of his assumption of office or until further orders, whichever is earlier, a government notification dated August 28 said.
  • Urjit Patel, who served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from September 4, 2016 to December 11, 2018, will fill the post of Managing Director that fell vacant from April 30 following the removal of Krishnamurthy Subramanian, former Chief Economic Advisor to the Finance Ministry.
  • The Indian Express had reported in April that Krishnamurthy Subramanian’s tenure ended prematurely due to “irregularities” related to the promotion of his new book.
Diamond League 2025 - Neeraj Chopra finishes 2nd
  • India's star athlete Neeraj Chopra disappointed in the Diamond League held in Switzerland. In this series, Germany's Julian Weber stunned by throwing the javelin over 90 meters twice in his six attempts. His highest throw was 91.51 meters.
  • Julian Weber, who was the runner-up in the Diamond League twice, has now won the trophy for the first time. Neeraj Chopra finished second with a throw of 85.01 meters. He is in the hunt for a gold medal at the World Championships to be held in Tokyo next month.
