Earthquake of 8.7 magnitude in Russia

  • A powerful earthquake occurred at a depth of 20 km near the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia at 8.25 am on Wednesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that it was registered as 8.7 on the Richter scale. 
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency said that waves of up to 3 feet will rise in coastal areas of Japan. Following this, a tsunami warning of up to 1 meter has been issued for the Pacific coast of Japan.
  • The earthquake occurred about 250 kilometers from Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four major islands. Moreover, it struck at a depth of 3 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
Nisar satellite successfully launched
  • ISRO and NASA jointly decided to launch a satellite called Nisar to monitor changes in the Earth's surface. The agreement for this was signed on September 30, 2014. After that, the joint efforts of scientists from both countries led to the completion of the Rs 12,000 crore Nisar satellite, which was built last year.
  • Following this, after completing various stages of tests, the Nisar satellite was planned to be launched from the 2nd launch pad in Sriharikota by the GSLV F-16 rocket.
  • In this situation, the rocket launch started on Tuesday, and the 27-hour and 30-minute countdown was successfully launched this evening (Wednesday). This satellite will be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit 743 km from Earth. It will be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit.
