India, Namibia sign 4 agreements in presence of PM Modi
  • The agreements were signed after Prime Minister Modi held bilateral talks with Namibian President Nedumbo Nandi Ndiaye in Windhoek on Wednesday.
  • Prime Minister Modi, who began his five-nation state visit to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia on July 2, reached the southwestern African country of Namibia on Wednesday.
  • He was accorded a ceremonial welcome with a 21-gun salute at the airport. Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Namibia in 30 years. This is his first visit to Namibia as Prime Minister.
  • Bilateral talks: Bilateral talks were held between Prime Minister Modi and President Nandi in Windhoek. The two leaders discussed ways to enhance cooperation in areas including defence, agriculture, health, education, trade, energy, pharmaceuticals, ICT and key minerals.
  • Following the talks, four MoUs were signed on cooperation in the health and pharmaceutical sectors, establishment of an Entrepreneurship Development Centre in Namibia, India-backed Disaster Recovery Infrastructure Alliance and Namibia’s accession to the Global Biofuels Alliance.
  • Prime Minister Modi thanked Namibia for its support for the Cheetah reintroduction project in India. It was also announced that the UPI service will be launched in Namibia by the end of this year, in line with the agreement signed between the two countries in April last year.
PM Modi receives Namibia's highest award
  • Prime Minister Modi has been conferred with Namibia's highest award, 'The Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis'. The award was presented by the country's President.
  • The award citation lauds PM Modi's leadership in technological innovation, economic growth, socio-climate justice, and international strategy that extends beyond India's borders.
  • Prime Minister Modi is the first Indian leader to receive Namibia's highest award. This is the 27th international award he has received since becoming Prime Minister.
