Wholesale Price Index in India for April 2025

• The annual inflation rate based on the All India Wholesale Price Index (AIP) for April 2025 (compared to April 2024) is 0.85% (provisional). The inflation rate in April 2025 is positive. 
• This inflation rate is primarily due to the increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of other goods, chemicals and chemical products, manufacture of other transport equipment, machinery and equipment, etc.
• The month-on-month change in the Wholesale Price Index for April 2025, as compared to March 2025, was (-) 0.19%.
• Primary commodities (weight 22.62%): - The index of this group of primary commodities decreased by 0.11% to 184.4 (provisional) in April 2025 from 184.6 (provisional) in March 2025. Crude petroleum and natural gas (-5.31%) and non-food items (-1.78%) decreased in April 2025 as compared to March 2025. Minerals (7.81%) and food items (0.36%) increased in April 2025 as compared to March 2025.
• Fuel and Electricity (Weight 13.15%): - The wholesale price index for this group of major commodities decreased by 2.82% to 148.1 points (provisional) from 152.4 points in April 2025. (provisional) for March 2025. In April 2025, as compared to March 2025, the prices of mineral oil products (-3.95%) and electricity (-1.38%) decreased. In April 2025, as compared to March 2025, the prices of coal increased by (0.22%).
• Manufactured Goods (Weight 64.23%): - The index of this major commodity group increased by 0.35% to 144.9 (Provisional) points in April 2025 from 144.4 (Provisional) points in March 2025. Out of the 22 two-digit groups of the National Data Centre for Manufactured Goods, 16 groups saw price increases. 5 groups saw price decreases. 1 group remained unchanged. Some of the major commodity groups that saw price increases month-on-month include: Manufacture of basic metals; Chemicals and chemical products; Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; Manufacture of machinery and equipment and other products. Some of the groups that saw price decreases include: Manufacture of textiles; Pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products; Paper and paper products; This includes the price ratio for the month of April 2025 as compared to March 2025.

India's anti-drone missile Bargavastra successfully tested

• India's anti-drone missile "Bargavastra" was successfully tested in Gopalpur, Odisha. The low-cost 'Bargavastra' missile, manufactured by SDAL, successfully shot down a drone in the air.
• In the tests conducted in the presence of senior Army Air Defence (AAD) officials on May 13, it was reported that all four missiles fired in three tests destroyed the drones in the air.
• The Bargavastra is capable of detecting and destroying small drones up to a distance of 2.5 km. The micro rocket installed in it can neutralize a swarm of drones with a lethal radius of up to 20 meters.
• It was manufactured by Surya Defence and Aerospace Limited. This low-cost anti-drone system, developed using the hard kill method, will confront enemy drones. The micro rockets used in the anti-drone system were rigorously tested at the Siward firing range in Gopalpur. The test was completely successful.

Justice P.R. Kawai takes oath as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

• He has taken over as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after the retirement of Sanjiv Khanna. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice P.R. Kawai in the Supreme Court. Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and others participated in the event.
• Justice P.R. Kawai will be the second Dalit Chief Justice of the country. Before Justice Kawai, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan became the first Dalit Chief Justice in 2007. Justice Kawai's name is at the top of the seniority list of the Supreme Court, hence Justice Khanna has proposed his name.

Ajay Kumar appointed as UPSC Chairman

• The term of Preeti Sudan, who was the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), ended on April 29, leaving the post of UPSC Chairman vacant.
• In this situation, former Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), according to an order issued by the Ministry of Public Service. 
• President Draupadi Murmu approved the appointment of Ajay Kumar as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) under Article 316(1) of the Constitution of India.

Cabinet approves setting up of semiconductor manufacturing plant in Uttar Pradesh

• The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today approved setting up of one more semiconductor plant under the Indian Semiconductor Scheme. Already, construction of five semiconductor plants is in advanced stages. With this sixth plant, India is moving ahead in its journey to develop the strategically important semiconductor industry.
• The plant approved today is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn. HCL has a long history of manufacturing hardware. Foxconn is a global leader in electronics manufacturing. Together, they will set up a plant at the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority or YEIDA, near Jewar Airport.
• The plant will manufacture mobile phones, laptops, auto parts, computers, etc. The plant is designed for 20,000 wafers per month. It will produce 36 million units per month. The semiconductor industry is currently booming across the country. World-class design facilities have come up in several states across the country. 
• Students and entrepreneurs from 270 educational institutions and 70 start-ups are working on the latest world-class design technologies to develop new products. The new semiconductor manufacturing plant approved today will attract an investment of Rs. 3,700 crore.
