Agreements signed during PM's visit to Thailand
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, who is on a state visit to Thailand, met His Excellency Mr. Padhao Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, in Bangkok today. Mr. Shinawatra received the Prime Minister upon his arrival at Government House and accorded him a ceremonial welcome.
- This was their second meeting. The two leaders had earlier met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane in October 2024.
- The two leaders reviewed the overall bilateral cooperation between India and Thailand.
- A joint declaration was issued on establishing an India-Thailand Strategic Partnership.
- A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Government of Thailand and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, for cooperation in the field of digital technology.
- A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Ports and Shipping, Government of India, and the Department of Fine Arts, Ministry of Culture, Government of Thailand, for development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, Gujarat.
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Small Industries Corporation of the Union Government and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Office of the Government of Thailand for cooperation in the field of micro, small and medium enterprises.
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region of the Union Government and the Ministry of External Affairs of Thailand.
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation of the Union Government and the Creative Economy Agency of the Government of Thailand.
- The Central Government has provided a grant of Rs. 1,440 crore of the 15th Finance Commission to rural local bodies and Panchayat Raj institutions in five states of Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland and Punjab for the financial year 2024-25.
- These grants are allocated in two installments in each financial year and are released by the Ministry of Finance based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Drinking Water and Sanitation).
- Accordingly, the first installment of the consolidated grant for the financial year 2024-25 is Rs. 651.7794 crore to Madhya Pradesh, Rs. 508.6011 crore to Gujarat, Rs. 35.40 crore to Arunachal Pradesh and Rs. 19.20 crore to Nagaland. The second installment of the financial year 2024-25 is Rs. 225.975 crore to Punjab.
- The post of Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was lying vacant after M.D. Batra resigned from the post in January last year. In this situation, the Union Cabinet Committee on Appointments has approved the appointment of Poonam Gupta as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India.
- Poonam Gupta is the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). She is a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and the Coordinator of the Advisory Group to the 16th Finance Commission.
- Poonam Gupta, who has worked for a long time at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, joined NCAER in 2021.
- Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperatives Shri Amit Shah has moved a legislative resolution in the Lok Sabha seeking approval to impose President's Rule in Manipur.
- Subsequently, a resolution was passed in the Lok Sabha. Tributes, sympathy and deep sorrow were expressed in the House for those who lost their lives in the violence in Manipur.
- The Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced in August last year. After strong opposition from the opposition parties, a joint parliamentary committee recommended that this law be considered.
- Following this, the amendment given by the opposition parties was completely rejected during the study of the joint action committee and the Waqf Amendment Bill was again introduced in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
- Following this, the Lok Sabha passed it on Thursday amidst strong opposition from the opposition parties. Members of the India Alliance strongly opposed this bill.
- The bill was passed after the amendments made by the opposition members were rejected. For this, the meeting was held till midnight.
- After Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's reply, Speaker Om Birla declared that Item No. 12 of the Listed Business - the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 - would be taken up for consideration.
- The question whether the Bill should be taken up for consideration was then asked, "Subject to amendments, the Bill was voted in favour by 288 votes to 232 votes against."
