National Security Advisory Committee Change
- The 2nd meeting of the Union Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Modi, was held at the Prime Minister's House today. The National Security Advisory Committee has been changed after the meeting of the Group of Ministers for Security was concluded.
- Accordingly, the Union Government has announced that the National Security Advisory Committee will function as a 7-member committee headed by former RAW chief Alok Joshi. Alok Joshi is the former chairman of the Indian intelligence agency RAW; former Air Force, Army and Navy officers have been appointed as members of the advisory committee.
- The current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna is retiring on May 13. On the 16th, the current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna recommended the Central Government to appoint P.R. Kavai as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
- P.R. Kavai will hold this post till his retirement on December 23. The retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65. Kavai, who hails from Maharashtra, enrolled as an advocate in 1985. He worked as an Assistant Public Prosecutor in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court from 1992-1993 and was appointed as a Public Prosecutor in 2000.
- He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and as a Permanent Judge in 2005. He became a Supreme Court judge on May 24, 2019.
- Prime Minister Shri. The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has decided to include caste enumeration in the upcoming Census.
- As per Article 246 of the Constitution of India, Census is listed at number 69 in the Seventh Schedule of the Union List.
- In the interest of sugarcane farmers, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved a fair and remunerative price of Rs. 355/- per quintal for sugarcane crop for the sugarcane growing season 2025-26 (October-September) at a basic recovery rate of 10.25%, which provides a premium of Rs. 3.46 per quintal for every 0.1% in excess of 10.25%. For every 0.1% of the redemption below this rate, the premium amount is reduced by Rs. 3.46 per quintal.
- However, in order to protect the welfare of sugarcane farmers, the Central Government has decided that no exemption will be given to sugar mills with less than 9.5% of the redemption. Such farmers will get Rs. 329.05 per quintal for sugarcane in the coming sugarcane season 2025-26.
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the development of National Highway No. 6 from Mawling in Meghalaya (near Shillong) to Panchgram in Assam (near Silchar). The Cabinet has approved the proposal for development, maintenance and management of 166.80 km long 4-lane Greenway Access Road as an expressway under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
- The total capital cost of the project is Rs. 22,864 crore. Out of the 166.80 km long project length, 144.80 km is in Meghalaya and 22.00 km is in Assam.
