New disease spreading in Australia - Health emergency declaration
- The state health department has announced that five new cases of Legionnaires' disease have been confirmed in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Furthermore, all five of them have been diagnosed after returning from Sydney's central business district.
- In this case, it is said that all the infected patients showed symptoms of the disease between March 30 and April 4. However, the root cause of the spread of the infection is not known, and the country's authorities are trying to find it.
- Previously, Legionnaires' is a type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria called Legionella that lives in freshwater. Doctors say that this bacteria will start showing symptoms such as headache, fever and cough within 2 to 10 days after entering the human body.
- Furthermore, the World Health Organization has stated that the risk of death for those infected with this airborne disease is 5-10 percent, and for those without immunity, the risk of death is up to 80 percent if the disease is not treated properly.
