2 bills approved by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi
  • A bill regarding the levy of land tax on mineral-bearing lands in Tamil Nadu was passed in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly last December.
  • This law provides for the levy of land tax on 13 types of minerals including brown coal, limestone, limestone, magnesite, and graphite as major minerals, and on 17 types of minerals including gravel, gravel or soil, colored and black granite, pebbles, sand, quartzite, fire clay, loam, clay, river sand, crushed stone, and limestone as minor minerals.
  • Accordingly, the tax for large minerals has been fixed at Rs. 40 to Rs. 7,000 per tonne, and for small minerals at Rs. 40 to Rs. 420 per tonne. In this context, Governor R.N. Ravi has approved these bills.
  • Apart from this, the Governor has also approved the bill regarding the appointment of separate officers for the local bodies in the 28 districts that have completed their term in Tamil Nadu. After the Governor's approval, both these bills have been published in the Official Gazette.
1% market duty exemption for maize trade in Tamil Nadu
  • Maize is cultivated on an average of 4 lakh hectares in Tamil Nadu and 29 lakh metric tons of maize is produced. While maize was mostly purchased for animal feed, its demand as a raw material in ethanol production factories has increased significantly. Due to this, the Tamil Nadu government is promoting maize cultivation among farmers on a large scale.
  • Following this, after examining the views received from farmers, traders and the public, the notification for maize, an agricultural produce issued under Section 9(1)(d) of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Produce Market (Regulation) Act, 1987, is hereby cancelled in all the marketing committee areas of Tamil Nadu. The existing one percent market levy for maize trading in Tamil Nadu is hereby waived.
Barbados to confer prestigious award on PM Modi
  • Prime Minister Modi has been conferred with the prestigious 'Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados' by Barbados. The award will be given in recognition of the assistance provided and regional leadership during the Covid period.
  • The award was presented by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Amor Modly, one of the West Indian islands. The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita, received it on behalf of India, the Union Ministry of External Affairs said.
High-level review meeting on the development of the cooperative sector
  • A high-level review meeting to review the progress of the cooperative sector was held today under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Various initiatives being taken by the Union Ministry of Cooperatives to promote the practice of resourcefulness through the cooperative sector, which is bringing about change through technological advancements in the sector, and to increase the participation of youth and women in the sector were discussed.
  • Emphasizing the need for partnerships with global cooperatives to expand the country's cooperative sector, the Prime Minister stressed the need to promote organic agricultural products through cooperatives.
  • He suggested focusing on export markets and developing a soil testing model through cooperatives to improve agricultural practices.
  • Stressing the need for integration of the UPI system with RuPay agricultural credit cards to facilitate financial transactions, the Prime Minister also highlighted the need for healthy competition among cooperatives.
