12th Regional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and Circular Economy Forum in Asia & Pacific
- The 12th Regional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and Circular Economy Forum in Asia & Pacific began in Jaipur. The inaugural session of the event was attended by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Shri Manohar Lal, and Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Bhajanlal Sharma.
- The session was attended by the Minister of the Solomon Islands, Mr. Trevor Headley Manemahaka, the Minister of Tuvalu, Mr. Maina Wakafua Thalia, and the Deputy Minister of Climate Change, Maldives, Mr. Ahmed Nizam. The Minister of the Environment, Japan, Mr. Asao Keichiro joined the session virtually.
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today visited Gir National Park in Gujarat. He chaired the 7th meeting of the National Board for Wildlife.
- In the meeting, the National Board for Wildlife reviewed various initiatives taken by the Union Government for wildlife conservation.
- The achievements made in creation of new protected areas and flagship projects like Tiger Reserve, Elephant Conservation Scheme, Snow Leopard Conservation Scheme, etc. were also discussed in detail in the meeting.
- Efforts to conserve dolphins and Asiatic lions and formation of an international consortium for leopard conservation were also discussed. During the meeting, the Prime Minister released the report of the first-ever river dolphin census conducted in the country.
- According to the report, a total of 6,327 river dolphins are estimated to be present. This pioneering initiative includes a census of dolphins in 28 rivers across eight states.
- The survey took 3150 man-days and covered a distance of more than 8,500 kilometers. The state of Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states with the highest number of dolphins, followed by Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.
