Chief Minister M.K. Stalin introduced the amendment bill to provide strict punishment for crimes against women
  • The first session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly of 2025 is being held for 5 days from Monday to January 6.   • MK Stalin said that Gnanasekaran, who was arrested in the incident of sexual assault of an Anna University student, is not a DMK executive, but only a DMK sympathizer. MK Stalin also said that whoever is involved will be severely punished according to the law.
  • In this situation, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin introduced the amendment bill in the Legislative Assembly on Friday to impose stricter punishment for crimes against women in Tamil Nadu.
  • The Tamil Nadu government has brought the Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2025, which will increase the punishment for crimes against women to the point of imprisonment until death.
  • Presenting this amendment bill in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said, 'The amendment bill is being brought to provide for imprisonment of up to 5 years and no bail for stalking a woman.
  • To prevent harassment of women, the punishments will be made stricter. In a case of sexual assault, a maximum sentence of life imprisonment will be imposed. If arrested in a repeated case of sexual assault, an amendment to the law will be made to impose life or death penalty.'
  • Chief Minister M.K. Stalin continued, 'The bill has been brought to increase the punishment for crimes against women and children. The Tamil Nadu government has come up with a bill to tighten laws and punishments so that women cannot be released on bail.
  • If a case is registered in certain crimes, if the identity of the victim is revealed, those involved will be sentenced to imprisonment for 3 to 5 years, said MK Stalin. Opposition Leader Edappadi Palaniswami said that he supports this amendment bill. Following this, the bill was passed by voice vote.

Rs. 1.73 lakh crore tax share release to states
  • This tax sharing is being given to the states based on the recommendations of the Finance Commission after considering various aspects including the needs of the state governments from the tax collected from the central government, the needs on which the states should spend it.
  • According to a statement issued by the Finance Ministry, a larger amount is being allocated this month to accelerate capital expenditure by the states and to finance their development and welfare expenditure.
  • Accordingly, a total of Rs. 1,73,030 crore has been allocated to the state governments for all the states, and the amount allocated by the central government in the same month of December 2024 is 89,086 crore, the Finance Ministry said. Currently, the central government is distributing 41 percent of the tax collected to the state governments in installments.
  • Uttar Pradesh has been allocated the maximum Rs 31,039.84 crore, Bihar Rs 17,403 crore, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal Rs 13,000 crore each. Andhra Pradesh has been allocated Rs 7,000 crore and Karnataka Rs 6,310 crore.
India's Industrial Production Index grows by 5.2% in November
  • The growth rate of the Industrial Production Index for November 2024 was 5.2 percent. It was 3.5 percent in October 2024 (rapid estimate). The growth rates of the three sectors - mining, manufacturing and power - for November 2024 are 1.9 percent, 5.8 percent and 4.4 percent respectively.
  • The rapid estimates of the Industrial Production Index were 141.1 in November 2023. It is 148.4 in November 2024. The indices of industrial production for the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors for November 2024 are 133.8, 147.4 and 184.1 respectively.
