Union Cabinet approves Rs 10,700 crore share capital in Food Corporation of India

  • Food Corporation of India started its journey in 1964 with an authorized capital of Rs 100 crore and share capital of Rs 4 crore. Food Corporation of India's operations have increased manifold resulting in an increase in authorized capital from Rs 11,000 crore to Rs 21,000 crore by February 2023.
  • The share of Food Corporation of India has increased from Rs 4,496 crore in FY 2019-20 to Rs 10,157 crore in FY 2023-24. Now, the central government has approved the issuance of a substantial equity capital of Rs 10,700 crore to the Food Corporation of India.
  • This will strengthen the Food Corporation of India financially and give a big boost to initiatives to bring about this change. The Food Corporation of India plays an important role in ensuring food security by procuring food grains at minimum support prices, maintaining essential food grain stocks, distributing food grains for welfare schemes and stabilizing food grain prices in the market.
Union Cabinet approves Prime Minister's Vidyalakshmi scheme
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the Prime Minister's Vidyalakshmi Scheme, a new central government scheme to provide financial assistance to deserving students.
  • The Prime Minister's Vidyalakshmi scheme is another major initiative under the National Education Policy- 2020. It is a scheme to provide financial assistance to meritorious students through various activities in government and private higher education institutions.
  • Under this, any student who takes admission in QHEIs is eligible for collateral-free, unsecured loans from banks and financial institutions. It is a completely digital program implemented through simple, transparent, student-friendly procedures.
  • The scheme applies to quality higher education institutions in the country as determined by NIRF rankings. The scheme will benefit over 22 lakh students enrolled in 860 Qualified Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs). The scheme has many benefits including education loan and interest subsidy.
Center and Asian Development Bank sign $200 million loan deal to improve urban services in Uttarakhand
  • The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank today signed a $200 million loan agreement to help improve water supply, sanitation, urban transport and other urban services in the state of Uttarakhand.
  • The loan agreement for the Uttarakhand Livelihood Development Project was signed by Ms. Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Myo Oka, Director, India, Asian Development Bank.
Light vehicle driving license holders can drive vehicles below 7,500 kg - Supreme Court verdict
  • According to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, holders of a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) driving license can only drive light vehicles such as cars, taxis, auto rickshaws. Heavy commercial vehicles cannot be operated.
  • Based on this, insurance companies refused to insure cover for Light Vehicle Driving License (LMV) holders in case of an accident while driving commercial vehicles. Also, it was said that most of the road accidents are caused by light vehicle driving license holders driving commercial vehicles.
  • Subsequently, the Constitutional Bench of 5 judges headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court TY Chandrachud has decided in this case. It said light vehicle license holders can drive commercial vehicles up to 7,500 kg and there is no data to suggest that light driver license holders are responsible for the increase in road accidents in the country.
  • The Supreme Court has requested the central government to speedily complete the legislative amendment work for this.
