The Prime Minister inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists
- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today (03-08-2024) inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists at the National Agricultural Science Center campus in New Delhi. The theme of this year's conference is "Transition towards Sustainable Agro-Food Systems".
- The conference aims to address the urgent need for sustainable agriculture to address global challenges such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, rising production costs, conflicts, etc. About 1,000 delegates from 75 countries participated in the conference.
- With more than 340 people killed in landslides in Wayanad, the central government has declared an area of 9,994 square kilometers in Kerala as an ecologically important area. The notification in this regard has been published on July 31.
- It was published the day after the Wayanad landslide occurred and 6 states including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat in the Western Ghats have been ordered to give an explanation within the next 60 days.
- In this notification, 449 square kilometers of Gujarat, 17,340 square kilometers of Maharashtra, 1,461 square kilometers of Goa, 20,668 square kilometers of Karnataka, 6,914 square kilometers of Tamil Nadu, 9,993.7 square kilometers of Kerala, total area of 56,800 square kilometers have been mentioned as ecologically important areas.
- The 5th ASEAN – India Joint Committee on Goods Trade Agreement Review Meeting of the Goods Trade Agreement was held from 29 July to 1 August 2024 at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. This marks a significant milestone in enhancing ASEAN-India economic cooperation.
- The meeting was jointly chaired by Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, India, Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Under Secretary (Trade), Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Malaysia. The meeting was attended by representatives from 10 ASEAN countries and India.
- The joint committee began discussions in May 2023. After finalizing the negotiating framework, its sub-committees began negotiations in February 2024. The first 2 rounds of talks were held in February 2024 in New Delhi and May 2024 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. During the 3rd round of negotiations held in Jakarta, Indonesia, significant developments were made.
- The Indian leader held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam to develop a common understanding on the issues to be discussed at the 5th Joint Summit.
- Through this, ASEAN Secretary General Dr. Gao Kim Hauren, ASEAN Deputy Secretary General Mr. Separate meetings were held with Satwinder Singh. ASEAN is India's major trading partner, accounting for about 11% of India's global trade.
- The AITGA Review Procedure, signed in 2009, will help improve the volume of India-ASEAN trade and create more opportunities for businesses on both sides. Its next meeting will be held in India from 19 to 22 November 2024.
