Findings of Smoking Tool at Vembakota Excavations
- The third phase of excavation work is going on at Vijayakarisalkulam near Vembakottai, Virudhunagar district. So far, more than 1,000 objects including flint figurines and conch bangles have been found. A flint smoking apparatus and a flint pipe were found in the excavation yesterday.
- Southwest Monsoon has intensified over Kerala. Heavy rains in Wayanad district led to massive landslides in the hilly areas of Meppadi region early on Tuesday morning. The flash floods, mixed with huge rocks and mud, engulfed the villages of Mundakkai, Suralmalai, Attamalai and Nulphuja.
- People who were sleeping in their houses were buried alive. Due to the landslide, these verdant villages turned into a burial ground. 300 soldiers of the Army, Navy team, National Disaster Response Force, Indian Coast Guard and other agencies are engaged in full-scale search and rescue operations in the landslide-affected areas.
- Air force helicopters and army sniffer dogs have also been involved in the operation. According to the rescue team, body parts are being recovered from the mud and rivers.
- Also, a temporary hospital has been set up in the landslide area and arrangements have been made to provide first aid treatment to those rescued alive.
- The death toll has risen to 163, the Kerala Health Department said on Wednesday morning. So far, more than a thousand people have been rescued from the landslide area, while more than 200 people are reported to be missing.
- Due to this, various agencies including Army, Navy, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force, Police Department, Fire Brigade are engaged in full-scale rescue operations amidst bad weather for the second day.
- The Union Staff Selection Commission (UPSC) conducts the examinations for various civil services including IAS, IPS, and IFS in India. Manoj Soni was the chairman of this commission. He resigned from the post on the 20th after a controversy arose in the recent election.
- President Drabupati Murmu accepted his resignation today and appointed Preethi Sudhan as the new president. Preethi Sudhan, former Health Secretary. He is currently serving as a member of UPSC.
