57.65% polling in the 5th phase election
  • The fifth phase of polling for the Lok Sabha was held today in 8 states and Union Territories. Voting was held for 14 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Maharashtra, 7 in West Bengal, 5 each in Bihar, Odisha, 3 in Jharkhand, and one each in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
  • Accordingly, as of 5 pm, 56.68 percent voting has been reported across the country. In this case, the Election Commission has announced that 57.65 percent (approximate) votes have been registered in the 5th phase election.
  • Bihar - 53.07%
  • Jammu and Kashmir - 55.49
  • Jharkhand - 63.06%
  • Ladakh - 67.15%
  • Maharashtra - 49.33%
  • Odisha - 61.24%
  • Uttar Pradesh – 57.79%
  • West Bengal - 73.06%
  • In the 5th phase election, maximum voting has been done in West Bengal and minimum in Maharashtra.
46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and 26th Meeting of the Committee on Environmental Protection
  • India is expected to play a key role in facilitating discussions at the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultation Meeting and the 26th meeting of the Environmental Protection Committee focusing on regulating tourism in Antarctica. 
  • The National Center for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Antarctic Treaty Secretariat will host these meetings in Kochi, Kerala from May 20 to 30, 2024. 
  • Union Minister of Geosciences Mr. Kiran Rijiju attended the program held today. More than 350 delegates from around 40 countries participated in this meeting.
  • The Antarctic Treaty Council and the Committee on Environmental Protection are high-level global annual meetings held under a treaty signed by 56 countries in 1959. 
  • During these meetings, member states of the Antarctic Treaty discuss issues related to the science, policy, governance, management, and conservation of Antarctica. 
  • The Environmental Protection Committee was established in 1991 under the Environmental Protection Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty. The Environmental Protection Committee advises the Antarctic Treaty Assembly on environmental protection in Antarctica.
  • India has been a consultative member of the Antarctic Treaty since 1983. Along with 28 other consultative countries, India plays an important role in managing the scientific exploration and environmental protection of Antarctica. 
  • India has the right to propose and vote on decisions and resolutions taken during the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Conference on matters such as governance, scientific research, environmental protection, cargo transport cooperation.
