Prediction of Southwest Monsoon
- Meeting the media in Delhi, he briefed about the southwest monsoon of 2024. He said that the long-term average of seasonal rainfall is 106%, which could be 5% more or less. The long-term average of seasonal rainfall across the country is 87 cm based on 1971-2020 data.
- Dr Ravichandran said the forecast is based on dynamics and statistical models and most parts of the country except parts of North-West, East and North-East India are likely to receive above normal rainfall. Less than normal snowpack in the Northern Hemisphere will favor rainfall during the 2024 Southwest Monsoon season.
- Snowfall in the Northern Hemisphere was below normal in the past three months (January to March 2024). In succession, monthly rainfall forecasts are released for the months of June, July and August respectively for a consecutive month.
- In addition, rainfall forecasts for the entire country and rainfall for the second half of the season (August-September) are released at the end of July along with the August forecast. Accordingly, the India Meteorological Department will release updated forecasts for monsoon rains in the last week of May.
- Cleanliness Fortnight 2024 (April 16 to 30, 2024) was inaugurated today by Mr. Umang Narula, Secretary, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. During this period, all pending files of the Ministry will be reviewed and redundant ones will be removed. Old, obsolete electronics and other items are collected and auctioned.
- It is also proposed to conduct an inter-school essay competition in one of the identified schools in Delhi during the fortnight. It is carried out with the aim of creating awareness among the youth about the importance and efficacy of cleanliness at all places.
- The fortnight will conclude on April 30, 2024, with prizes to be awarded by the Secretary of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to the top three categories that stand best on the cleanliness criteria.
