The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is ranked 50th in the ranking list for the year 2022-23 published by the Central Power Department
  • The Central Electricity Department has released a ranking list of 53 power distribution companies for the financial year 2022-23 that includes financial status and performance. In this, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been ranked 50th.
  • Some states like Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat have more than 2 power distribution companies. In Tamil Nadu, only Minnupadthi and Parimana Kazhagam, a subsidiary of Tamil Nadu Power Board, undertakes such works.
  • The Union Ministry of Power examines the performance, financial condition, etc. of power distribution companies across the country and publishes an annual ranking list.
  • Accordingly, the rank list for the year 2022-23 has been published. Tamil Nadu Electricity and Distribution Corporation is ranked 50th in the list and has a grade of 'C minus'.
  • The gap between Tamil Nadu Power Board's electricity sales and revenue is Rs.1.06 crore. Also, late collection of electricity tariff revenue and high expenditure on electricity purchase have been reported as reasons.
  • Adani Electricity, a private sector power company in Maharashtra, has topped the list, followed by Surat-based Torrent Power in Gujarat and Ahmedabad-based Torrent Power in third place.
Supreme Court bans Center's fact-finding commission
  • A fact-finding committee was constituted to identify and remove false information being spread against the central government.
  • The fact-finding committee will check the misrepresentations about central government schemes. The central government had said that if the information is found to be wrong, the social networking sites should delete the post immediately, otherwise action should be taken against them.
  • In this situation, the Supreme Court has placed an interim stay on the central government's order to set up a fact-checking committee. In a case against the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2023, the Supreme Court has ordered an interim stay pending a final verdict in the Bombay High Court.
MoU between National Students Corps, Atomic Energy Corporation of India
  • An MoU was signed between the National Students Corps and the Indian Atomic Energy Corporation on March 21, 2024 in New Delhi. This agreement has been undertaken to create awareness about the peaceful use of nuclear energy through various programmes. 
  • Following this, various awareness programs are being held across the country. National Students Corps Director General Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh and Indian Atomic Energy Corporation Managing Director Mr PVS Shekhar signed the MoU.
  • Atomic Energy Corporation of India engages relevant persons with National Student Corps during camps and imparts various activities related to Nuclear Energy to the National Student Corps. 
  • The MoU will provide a unique opportunity for the National Cadets to visit various facilities of the Indian Atomic Energy Corporation across the country and provide hands-on experience on the methodology and technical aspects of peaceful use of nuclear energy.
