All three Criminal Bills were passed in the Lok Sabha
- All three Criminal Bills to replace the colonial-era criminal laws were passed by voice vote in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled three bills in Lok Sabha last week namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Saksha Bill.
- These three bills will formally replace the Indian Penal Code 1860, the Criminal Procedure Code 1898 and the Indian Evidence Act 1872.
- The Ministry of Defense has signed an agreement with Mazakan Shipyard in Mumbai on December 20, 2023 to procure six next-generation maritime patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard. The contract for the purchase of these vessels was entered into at a total cost of Rs.1614.89 crores.
- These modern and hi-tech vessels will play a vital role in enhancing the Indian Coast Guard's core capabilities including surveillance, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and other vital capabilities.
- These versatile state-of-the-art vessels are being designed in-house by Mumbai's MTL and contracted to be delivered in 66 months.
- The agreement envisages achieving Self-Reliance India's objectives of increasing the country's domestic shipbuilding capacity, promoting maritime economic activities and promoting the growth of ancillary industries, particularly the MSME sector.
