• ஸ்மார்ட் சிட்டி நகரங்களின் தரவரிசை பட்டியல் 2023 / SMART CITIES RANKING 2023: தமிழகத்தின் மதுரை 8-வது இடத்தை பிடித்துள்ளது. இந்தியாவின் 100 நகரங்களில் உள்கட்டமைப்பை மேம்படுத்தி, பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்துவதற்காக 'ஸ்மார்ட் சிட்டி' திட்டம் மத்திய அரசால் கடந்த 2015-ல் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது
• 2016 ஜனவரி முதல் 2018-ம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் வரை பல்வேறு சுற்று போட்டியின் மூலம் 100 நகரங்கள் இத்திட்டத்துக்கு தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டன. 
• இந்த நகரங்கள் தங்களின் அனைத்து வளர்ச்சித் திட்டங்களையும் 5 ஆண்டுகளுக்குள் முடிக்க வேண்டும் என மத்திய அரசு எதிர்பார்க்கிறது. கடந்த மே மாதம், இந்த நகரங்கள் தங்கள் திட்டப் பணிகளை முடிப்பதற்கான காலக்கெடுவை 2024 ஜூன் வரை மத்திய அரசு நீட்டித்தது.
• இந்த காலக்கெடு நெருங்கிவரும் நிலையில் திட்டங்கள் நிறைவு, நிதிப் பயன்பாடு மற்றும்பிற அளவுகோல்கள் அடிப்படையில் 'ஸ்மார்ட் சிட்டி' நகரங்களின் தரவரிசை வெளியாகியுள்ளது.
• இதில் முதல் 10 நகரங்கள் பட்டியலில் குஜராத் மாநிலத்தின் சூரத் முதலிடத்தில் உள்ளது. இதையடுத்து ஆக்ரா (உ.பி), அகமதாபாத் (குஜராத்), வாரணாசி (உ.பி), போபால் (ம.பி), ஆகியவை முதல் 5 இடங்களில் உள்ளன.
• துமக்குரு (கர்நாடகா), உதய்பூர் (ராஜஸ்தான்), மதுரை (தமிழ்நாடு), கோட்டா (ராஜஸ்தான்), சிவமோகா (கர்நாடகா) ஆகியவை முதல் 10 நகரங்கள் பட்டியலில் உள்ள மற்ற நகரங்கள் ஆகும்.
• இதற்கு மாறாக யூனியன் பிரதேசங்கள் மற்றும் வடகிழக்கு மாநில நகரங்கள் மிகவும் பின்தங்கியுள்ளன.

• SMART CITIES RANKING 2023: Madurai of Tamil Nadu is ranked 8th. The 'Smart City' initiative was launched by the central government in 2015 to improve infrastructure and drive economic growth in 100 cities in India.
• From January 2016 to June 2018, 100 cities were selected for this program through various rounds of competition. The central government expects these cities to complete all their development projects within 5 years. 
• Last May, the central government extended the deadline for these cities to complete their project work till June 2024.
• As this deadline approaches, the ranking of 'Smart City' cities based on project completion, fund utilization and other criteria has been released.
• In this list of top 10 cities, Surat of Gujarat state is at the top. Agra (UP), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Varanasi (UP), Bhopal (MP) are in the top 5 places.
• Other cities in the top 10 list are Dumakuru (Karnataka), Udaipur (Rajasthan), Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Kota (Rajasthan), Shivamogga (Karnataka).
• In contrast, the Union Territories and cities of North-Eastern States are far behind.
