The number is a basic but important measuring unit in chemistry used for calculating number of large entities like atoms and molecules. To increase the interest of children in studying Chemistry, Mole Day was established by the National Mole Day Foundation (NMDF).

What is Mole?
MOLE DAY 2023: Mole is a standard unit of measurement used to calculate large quantities of very small entities such as atoms, molecules, etc. The mole designates an extremely large number of units, 6.02214076 × 10^23, also known as the Avogadro’s number.
For a given molecule, one mole is a mass in grams whose number is equal to the molar mass of the molecule. Understanding this in terms of water molecules, it has a molar mass of 18 which means that the weight of one mole of water is 18 grams. Now generalizing this, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance.

MOLE DAY 2023: The first mention of Mole Day originated in an article in The Science Teacher in the early 1980s. Inspired by this article, a high school chemistry teacher named Maurice Oehler from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, founded the National Mole Day Foundation (NMDF) on May 15, 1991.
The National Mole Day Foundation was a non-profit organization made mainly from current and former chemistry teachers, technicians and enthusiasts. The main goal of the foundation was to spark enthusiasm in students, teachers, and chemistry enthusiasts alike.
The foundation declared the celebration of Mole Day on October 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm as it represents the Avogadro’s Number. The first Mole Day was celebrated on October 23, 1991.
