Sachin Tendulkar has been announced as the National Icon of the year 2023 by the Election Commission of India
  • The Election Commission appoints eminent people from various fields as national icons to encourage voters to participate in the election process.
  • Last year, the commission recognized actor Pankaj Tripathi as a national icon. Earlier, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, people like MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan and Mary Kom were the national icons of the Election Commission. 
  • Sachin Tendulkar has been announced as the national symbol of Election Commission of India this year. The MoU will be signed today (Wednesday) between Tendulkar and the Election Commission. As part of the three-year deal, Tendulkar will reportedly spread voter awareness.
15th BRICS Summit
  • Prime Minister Modi arrived in South Africa earlier on Tuesday at the invitation of the country's President Madamela Cyril Ramaphosa to attend the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24. 
  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed Prime Minister Modi. Although South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were present, Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the event. The event was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
  • This is Prime Minister Modi's third visit to South Africa and marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and South Africa. This 2023 year BRICS is under the leadership of South Africa. The theme of 2023 year's summit is: "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism".
World Athletics Championships - Women's 100m Gary Richardson won the running gold
  • In the women's 100m final of the ongoing series in Budapest, Hungary, Shaw Carey (23 years old) topped the race distance in 10.65 seconds. Jamaican Sharika Jackson (10.72 seconds) won silver and two-time Olympic champion Shelley Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.77) won bronze.
  • It is noteworthy that this is the first gold medal won by Shaw Carey at the World Athletics Championships. In the women's 100m race, she equaled the previous record of 4 athletes who clocked 10.65 seconds to win gold.
Indian Coast Guard signed MoU with Philippine Coast Guard
  • In a significant move to strengthen bilateral cooperation between India and the Philippines, the Indian Coast Guard has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for enhanced maritime cooperation. 
  • The MoU was signed by DG Rakesh Pal, Director General, Indian Coast Guard, and Commandant, PCG, CG Admiral Artemio M Abu, at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi today. The two sides held their first bilateral meeting on maritime issues.
  • The MoU seeks to enhance professional linkage between the two Coast Guards in the areas of Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE), Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR) and Marine Pollution Recovery (MPR). 
  • Implementation of this MoU will enhance bilateral maritime cooperation between the two countries to ensure safe and clean seas in the region. The first bilateral meeting between the two maritime organizations signifies a commitment to strengthen professional ties by sharing best practices, conducting joint exercises and enhancing training collaborations.
Union Finance Minister Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a brainstorming session of the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs at Kevadia, Gujarat
  • The three-day Sindan Shiveer of the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs concluded today in Kevadia, Gujarat. Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the brainstorming session in the presence of Union Ministers of State for Finance Mr. Pankaj Chaudhary and Dr. Bhagwat Kisanrao Karat. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
  • Prime Minister Mr. Free and open discussions were held by more than 100 senior officials of the Union Environment Ministry and MCA on how to achieve the Amritsar goals by following five pledges as per Narendra Modi's dream.
Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari introduced a new car assessment scheme called Bharat NCAP
  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari launched (22.08.2023) in New Delhi a new car assessment scheme called Bharat NCAP, which aims to improve safety standards for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes and thereby improve road safety in the country.
  • The scheme will start from October 1, 2023. The scheme aims to create an improvement in the vehicle safety system by increasing awareness among consumers. NCAP offers original equipment manufacturing companies (OEMs) the opportunity to manufacture vehicles to global safety standards. 
  • The Central Road Transport Corporation (CIRT) implements the scheme. The scheme has been developed based on the suggestions of various parties belonging to the sector.
