History of Hari Merdeka

• HARI MERDEKA 2023 / MALAYSIA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY 2023: Malaysia was under British colonial rule for more than 150 years, beginning in the 1800s. In the early 20th century, nationalism began to grow, and the Malay Nationalist Party was formed in 1946, demanding independence. In 1955, a conference of Malay political parties led to the formation of the Alliance Party, which later won the 1955 general election. 
• After negotiations with the British government, the Federation of Malaya achieved independence on August 31st, 1957, with Tunku Abdul Rahman, the leader of the Alliance Party, becoming the first Prime Minister of Malaya.

• HARI MERDEKA 2023 / MALAYSIA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY 2023: The national flag of Malaysia, also known as the Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory), consists of 14 horizontal stripes alternating white and red; at the edge of the canton is a yellowish-crescent and a fourteen-pointed star on a blue field representing the country's 13 states and the federal territories. In the upper left-hand corner is a blue rectangle with a yellow crescent and star. 
• The crescent is the representation of Islam, the country's official religion. The blue canton stands for the unity of the Malaysian people while the yellow of the star and crescent is the royal color of the Malay rulers. 
• The flag has a proportion of 1:2. It was designed by Mohamed Hamzah and was first adopted on 26 May 1950 (11-point star and 11 stripes). The current 14-point star and 14 stripes flag was adopted on 16th September 1963.
