Karnataka Police chief Praveen Soot appointed as new CBI director
  • Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is set to retire on the 25th. Subsequently, the central government started the procedures for appointing a new director.
  • According to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice T.Y. In this, the names of 3 senior officers namely Karnataka DGP Praveen Chute, Madhya Pradesh IPS officer Sudhir Saxena and Punjab IPS officer Thinkar Gupta were considered.
  • It was unanimously decided to appoint Praveen Chute, who is now the Karnataka State Director General of Police (DGP), as the new CBI Director. Accordingly, the Union Ministry of Personnel and Training issued an order to this effect yesterday evening. He will hold office for the next 2 years.
  • An IIT-Delhi graduate, Praveen Chute joined the IPS in 1986. He has held various high positions and is very efficient. In particular, he served as the Commissioner of Police in Mysuru from 2004 to 2007 and played an important role in the arrest of a Pakistani terrorist. It is to be noted that he has been serving as Karnataka DGP since 2018.
BrahMos missile, which travels 5 times the speed of sound, is a success
  • The BrahMos supersonic missile, developed for naval use, was test-launched from INS Marmagova. A BrahMos missile fired from the ship hit the target accurately. The missile-launching ship INS Marmagova and the BrahMos missile are indigenously manufactured.
  • The India-Russia joint venture BrahMos missile can now be launched from land, aircraft, ships and submarines.
Everest for the 26th time, a new world record
  • Kami Reeda Sherpa, 52, a guide from Nepal, holds the record for the highest summit of Mount Everest at 8,848.86 meters in the world. He reached the summit of Everest for the 26th time, breaking his previous record.
  • In this case, Pasang Dawa Sherpa reached the 8,849-meter peak for the 26th time, equaling Nepalese guide Kami Reeda's record. He reached the top of Everest along with a mountaineer from Hungary. 
  • Meanwhile Kami Reeda is camping at the base of Everest for her 27th expedition. This week alone, 19 mountaineers, including 5 foreigners, have reached the world's highest peak, Mount Everest.
India-Indonesia Bilateral Exercise Samudra Sakthi - 23
  • The indigenously built INS Kavarati arrived in Indonesia to participate in the 4th edition of the India-Indonesia bilateral exercise Samudra Shakti-23 from May 14-19. Indian Navy's Tornier maritime patrol aircraft and Chetak helicopters are participating in it.
  • Also represented are KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda, CN 235 maritime patrol aircraft and Panther helicopter from the Indonesian Navy. The maritime exercise aims to enhance interoperability, joint and mutual cooperation between the two navies.
  • Training includes professional interactions, professional exchanges and sports equipment. During the sea exercise, weapon launch, helicopter operations, anti-submarine warfare and air defense exercises will be carried out.
Ministry of Defense approves 4th constructive indigenization list of 928 ready replacement equipment/subsystems/spare parts of military importance
  • To promote 'Self-Reliance India' in defense sector and reduce imports of defense PSUs, Rs. The Ministry of Defense has approved the 4th constructive indigenization list of 928 immediate equipments/sub-systems/spare parts of military importance with import subsidy worth Rs 715 crore. Details of these devices are available on Srijan website (https://srijandefence.gov.in/). These will be procured from Indian industry only after the deadline mentioned in the list.
  • This fourth Indigenization List (PIL) is a continuation of the three lists already published in December 2021, March 2022, August 2022 regarding replacement equipment/subsystems/spare parts. 
  • 2,500 devices have been domesticated in the already published lists. A further 1,238 (351+107+780) devices will be domesticated within the specified time frame. Out of these 310 devices (1st PIL - 262, 2nd PIL - 11, 3rd PIL - 37) have been indigenized so far.
International Athletics Championships 2023 - Tejaswin 'Silver'
  • New Life International Athletics Championship was held. India's Tejaswin Shankar, 24, participated in the men's high jump event. He had set a national record by clearing 2.29m in the American series in 2018. 
  • Tejaswin Shankar, who won bronze in last 2022 Commonwealth (Birmingham), jumped 2.21m this time and took second place and won the silver medal. Bahamas player Donald Thomas 38, who won gold in the 2007 World Championship, this time jumped 2.26m and won the gold medal. Jamaican Lushan Wilson (2.21m) shared the second spot with Shankar.
