Siddhartha Mohanty is the new chairman of LIC
  • FSIP, the 'Financial Services Institutions Task Force', was actively involved in the search for the appointment of heads of central government banks and financial institutions last month. Following this, Siddhartha Mohanty was nominated as the Chairman of LIC, known as 'Life Insurance Corporation of India'. 
  • Subsequently, the central government announced yesterday that Mohanty has been appointed as the new chairman of LIC. In this post, Mohanty will hold office until he turns 62 or on June 7, 2025. 
  • Presently, Mohanty is the Managing Director of LIC. And M.R.Kumar, after completing the post of chairman on 13th March, was also looking after the chairmanship. BC Patnaik, former managing director of LIC, has been appointed as a member of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.
Indian economy to grow 5.9% this year - IMF forecast
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF), which predicts the economic condition of the world, released its latest report on the same on the 11th. Accordingly, it has been reported that India's economic growth in the current financial year will be 5.9 percent.
  • This year, global GDP growth will be 2.8 percent, and next year's global GDP growth will be 3 percent, according to the IMF.
Prime Minister inaugurated 91 new 100 Watts cable transmitters to improve cable connectivity in the country
  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today inaugurated 91 new 100 watts radio transmitters through a video presentation. The launch will further boost the country's radio connectivity.
  • Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister welcomed the Padma awardees in large numbers attending the function. He said that this event is a major step in expanding the service of All India Radio in its efforts to become an All India Broadcaster. He mentioned that the launch of 91 dedicated transmitters of All India Radio is a great gift to 85 districts and 2 crore people of the country.
  • 91 new 100 Watts radio transmitters have been installed in 84 districts in 18 states and 2 Union Territories as the government is committed to expand radio communication in the country. Special attention will be given to expanding the connectivity of developing districts and border areas. 
  • These include states and Union Territories including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 
  • This expansion will now benefit 2 crore people who were not previously served with the quality of All India Radio. Broadcasting will be expanded to an area of about 35,000 square kilometers.
Index of Eight Major Industrial Sectors for March-2023
  • The index for eight major industrial sectors increased by 3.6 per cent (provisional) in March 2023 as compared to March 2022. Production of coal, fertiliser, steel, natural gas and refined products increased in March 2023 over the same period last year. Eight industrial sectors namely Coal, Crude Oil, Refinery, Fertilizer, Steel, Cement and Power accounted for 40.27 percent of the industrial production index.
  • Coal production increased by 12.2 percent, natural gas production by 2.8 percent, petroleum refined products by 1.5 percent, fertilizer production by 9.7 percent, and steel production by 8.8 percent in March 2023 over March 2022.
  • Crude oil production declined by 2.8 percent, cement production by 0.8 percent, and electricity production by 1.8 percent in March 2023 compared to March 2022.

  • Mr. Nitin Gadkari chaired the 10th meeting of Transport Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization held in New Delhi today. Transport Ministers of India, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan participated in this meeting held under the leadership of India. 
  • The representatives of the member countries supported the concept of Shanghai Cooperation Organization to promote the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in transport, electronic transition and innovation technology in order to achieve better efficiency and sustainability.
  • A special task force has been created to promote connectivity among the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in the field of transport.
