Bola Tinubu wins Nigerian presidential election

  • The former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu, was declared the winner in the presidential election held last Saturday in Nigeria. Adiku Abubak, Beat Obi, Rabibu Wangkwaso competed with Bola in this fierce competition.
  • In this, the Dotal Commission announced on Wednesday that Sonda candidate Tinubu won the ruling party with 36.61 percent of the votes.
GST collection in February was Rs 1.49 lakh crores
  • 1,49,577 crores have been collected as GST in the last month of February. This is 12 percent more than the previous year. GST has collected more than Rs.1.4 lakh crore for 12 consecutive months including last month.
  • Last January, Rs 1.57 lakh crore was collected. The highest collection in the current financial year was Rs 1.68 lakh crore in February last year.
  • The GST collected last February was Rs 1,49,577 crore, including central GST Rs 27,662 crore, state GST Rs 34,915 crore and integrated GST Rs 75,069 crore. 35,689 crore has been collected from imported goods in integrated GST. 11,931 crore was collected as cess tax.
Union Cabinet approves signing agreement with L&T to purchase 3 training ships for Navy personnel at Rs 3,100 crore
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an agreement with Larsen & Dubrow (L&D) for the purchase of 3 training ships for Navy personnel.
  • The vessels, which will be procured at a cost of Rs 3,108.09 crore, will be procured under the Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured (India-IDTM) category. L&T will start delivering these vessels from 2026 onwards.
  • These ships will cater to the training requirements of training officers, including women, in the Navy. Soldiers from allied nations will also be trained through this ship to strengthen Kingdom-to-Kingdom ties. These ships are also used for rescue and humanitarian assistance during disaster relief operations.
  • These vessels will be designed, developed and built at L&T Shipyard, Chennai. The project will generate 22.5 lakh man-days of employment in four-and-a-half years. The scheme will provide more opportunities and encourage companies in the Indian shipbuilding industry and related MSMEs.
  • Most of the equipment for these ships will be manufactured by indigenous companies and will be a credit to the central government's initiative Self-Reliance India and Make-in India.
Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar took over as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff
  • Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar took charge as Deputy Chief of Army Staff on March 1, 2023. Mr. Suchindra Kumar has been appointed to the charge after Lt. Gen. PS Raju, who previously held the charge, was appointed as the Chief of the Jaipur-headquartered Southwest Brigade (Saptha Shakti).
  • Earlier Mr. MV Suchindra Kumar was serving as Deputy Commander in Chief of Army Staff. Educated at Bijapur Sainik School and National Defense Academy, he joined the Assam Regiment in 1985.
Union Cabinet approves purchase of 70 HDT-40 basic trainer aircraft from HAL for Indian Air Force at a cost of Rs 6,800 crore
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the purchase of 70 HDT-40 basic training aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) for the Indian Air Force at a cost of Rs 6,828.36 crore. This aircraft will be delivered over a period of 6 years.
  • The aircraft is manufactured with 56% indigenous equipment which is likely to increase to 60%. Hindustan Aeronautics will involve Indian private industry, including MSMEs, in the supply chain.
  • 1500 people will be directly employed and up to 3000 people will be indirectly employed in more than 100 MSMs through this aircraft purchase. Procurement of HDD-40 will strengthen Indian space defense and boost efforts towards a self-reliant India.
India hosted the first Executive Committee meeting of the BIMSTEC Consortium Initiatives Center for Energy
  • India hosted the first Executive Committee meeting of the BIMSTEC Initiatives Energy Centre, a Bay of Bengal multilateral technical and economic consortium, on February 27, 2023, in Bengaluru.
  • Mr. Ajay Tiwari, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, welcomed the representatives from the member countries of the Center and spoke in detail about the cooperative activities among the member countries.
  • Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand are members of this organization. It was informed about the establishment of an energy center of this organization in India. Gnansham Prasad has been appointed as the head of this centre.
