Keeladi Excavation Report - Submited to Central Govt
  • Amarnath Ramakrishnan was the Superintendent of the Bangalore Excavation Zone of the Central Department of Archaeology. In the years 2014-15, he carried out excavations in Sivagangai district.
  • In it, antiquities including a building belonging to the Sangam period, a furnace for dye industry, a casing well and coins were found. Here, over a larger area, the Sangam habitat area emerged; It had a great impact on Indian explorers. The next phase of excavation also raised great expectations.
  • In this case, he was transferred to the state of Assam. Thereafter, Sriraman, an explorer, explored the bottom and reported to the Central Archeology Department that no significant artifacts were found.
  • Due to this, the Central Archeology Department abandoned the Keeladi excavation. Subsequently, the antiquities were taken to Bangalore. This was prevented by the inspectors.
  • They also held several protests demanding that Amarnath should be shifted back to Tamil Nadu and the excavation report should be released quickly.
  • But, he was transferred to Goa. In September last year, he was transferred as Superintendent to the Chennai District Temple Research Unit of the Central Department of Archaeology, due to continuous agitation by archeology enthusiasts.
  • As part of that mission, he and his team engaged in mapping the underground artefacts deposited in Chennai, identifying inscriptions on pottery, and dating them based on laboratory reports of organic chemicals.
  • Subsequently, Amarnath Ramakrishnan submitted the full report of the two-year excavation to Vidyavathy, Director General of the Central Archeology Department yesterday in Delhi.
